Interviewing while serving notice can work in your favour, because employers with urgent roles may prefer candidates who can join soon, but it also puts a deadline on your income. Before resigning without an offer, plan your dates backwards from your last working day, count your savings runway, and prepare a clear answer for why you resigned first.
First decide whether you should resign without an offer
This is a personal financial decision, and many people are better off interviewing while still employed. Use this table to see which side you are on.
| Factor | Safer to resign first | Safer to stay until offer |
|---|---|---|
| Notice period | 60-90 days, and roles you want ask for 30 or less | 30 days or less |
| Savings | Six months or more of expenses | Under three months |
| Interview pipeline | Several active processes, at least one at final rounds | Only early-stage applications |
| Current job | Unworkable: health, conduct or relocation reasons | Tolerable |
| Market for your skills | Frequent recruiter calls | Few calls |
If most of your ticks are in the right-hand column, stay and use the plan in a weekly job search while working full time instead.
Worksheet: plan backwards from your last working day
A fictional example. Meenal, a data scientist with a 90-day notice period, resigns on 1 October with a last working day of 30 December.
| Date | Milestone | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1 Oct | Resign; confirm last working day in writing | Starts the clock |
| 1-15 Oct | Update resume, portal profiles to "serving notice, LWD 30 Dec" | Notice status filters matter in recruiter searches |
| 15 Oct - 30 Nov | Main interview window | Offers made now can be joined in January |
| 30 Nov | Target: at least one offer | Leaves a month for BGV and acceptance |
| 1-30 Dec | Handover, BGV, any early release talk | Keep the relieving process clean |
| 30 Dec | Last working day | |
| Jan onwards | Join, or run on savings | Fallback plan starts here |
Now the savings runway. With hypothetical monthly expenses of ₹45,000 and savings of ₹2,70,000, the runway is six months after the last salary. That determines how selective you can afford to be in November.
Update your job portal profiles
On most portals, the notice period field offers options such as "serving notice period" with a last working day. Fill it in. Recruiters filtering for joiners within 30 days will find you only if the field is updated. Keep the date consistent everywhere: portal, resume summary line and LinkedIn.
Summary line: Data scientist, 4 years in retail forecasting. Serving notice,
last working day 30 December 2026.Answer "Why did you resign without an offer?"
Interviewers ask this to check for hidden problems and to judge your urgency. Keep it short and positive.
I wanted my next move to be a proper step into forecasting at a product company,
and with a 90-day notice period I was losing processes that needed someone within
a month. Resigning first let me interview for roles I actually want. I planned
the finances for it, so I am being selective rather than rushed.Avoid criticising your current employer, and do not imply desperation; "I need a job quickly" invites a low offer.
Handle offers that arrive at different times
Offers rarely arrive together. Some practical rules:
- Ask each company its decision timeline at the start of final rounds and write it in your tracker.
- When an early offer arrives, ask for a reasonable response window. Then tell companies still in process that you have an offer and your deadline. Keep that message to three lines: the offer exists, the date it expires, and that you would prefer their role if timing allows.
- Do not accept two offers intending to choose later. The risks are covered in reneging on a signed offer.
Keep your current job clean while you interview
- Take interviews on your own device and time; use leave for in-person rounds.
- Keep doing the work well. Your last manager is your next reference, and BGV will contact your employer.
- Do not negotiate your notice down and then extend it again to suit an interview; it looks unreliable.
- Do not take company data, code or documents with you as "portfolio". It can breach your contract and confidentiality obligations.
If the last working day arrives with no offer
This is the scenario the savings runway exists for. Have the plan written before you resign:
If no offer by LWD:
- Continue applications at the same pace; widen location to include remote.
- Spend 2 hours a day on one portfolio project in the target domain.
- Re-check expenses monthly; set a date by which I accept a good-enough role.
- Be ready to explain the gap in one line: "I finished notice on 30 December and
have been interviewing selectively since, while building a demand-planning
project."A short gap after a planned resignation is easy to explain; see explaining a career gap. If the extra weeks go into a structured project portfolio, the Data Science programme runs live online with recordings, so it fits around interview schedules.
