A weekly job-search plan for someone working full time

If you work full time, plan about eight to ten hours a week for the job search, split into short fixed weekday blocks for applications and outreach, one longer weekend block for portfolio or interview practice, and a thirty-minute Sunday review of what produced responses. Fixed blocks beat bursts of effort, because a search while employed usually runs for months and has to survive busy weeks at work.
Decide your weekly capacity honestly
Before the schedule, do the arithmetic for your own week. A fictional example: Aditya, an operations analyst in Gurugram, commutes by metro and works 9:30 to 6:30.
| Time available | Hours per week |
|---|---|
| Weekday mornings, 6:45-7:30, three days | 2.25 |
| Metro commute reading (phone only), five days | 2.5 (low-quality time: reading, not writing) |
| One weekday evening, 9:00-10:00 | 1 |
| Saturday morning | 3 |
| Sunday review | 0.5 |
| Total | about 9 |
Commute time counts, but only for tasks that work on a phone: reading job descriptions, saving postings, drafting a message you will polish later. Do not plan resume editing or coding there.
The weekly template
| Day | Block | Task | Weekly target |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mon | Commute | Scan postings, save 5-8 that fit into the tracker | 5-8 saved |
| Tue | Morning 45 min | Tailor resume and apply to 2 saved roles | 2 applications |
| Wed | Commute | Find one contact at each of 2 saved companies | 2 contacts identified |
| Wed | Evening 60 min | Send 2 referral or cold messages; one follow-up | 2 messages sent |
| Thu | Morning 45 min | Tailor and apply to 2 more roles | 2 applications |
| Fri | Commute | Read one engineering or data blog from a target company | Notes for outreach |
| Sat | 3 hours | Portfolio project or interview practice (alternate weeks) | One visible increment |
| Sun | 30 min | Review tracker, set next week's targets | Plan written |
That gives roughly four well-tailored applications, two personal messages and one portfolio or practice session per week. Quality applications of this kind usually beat twenty generic ones, but track it and see what your own data says.
Alternate Saturdays between two modes
- Build week: move one portfolio project forward by a visible increment. A finished section of the README counts; "learned more pandas" does not.
- Practice week: one timed SQL or Python problem set, one mock case question out loud, and one recorded answer to a behavioural question.
When you get an interview invitation, the next Saturday becomes preparation for that company regardless of the rotation.
The Sunday review: four questions
Open your application tracker and answer in writing:
- 1How many applications, messages and follow-ups did I actually do versus the targets?
- 2Did anything produce a response? What was different about it?
- 3Which follow-ups are due this week?
- 4What one change will I make next week?
Example of a real change: "Three cold emails got no replies; two referral requests got one reply. Next week: four referral requests, no cold emails." Keep the notes. After six weeks they show what works for you.
Protect your current job
A search while employed carries risks that a full-time searcher does not face.
- Do not use your work laptop, email or network for the search. Company devices are often monitored, and it is a common policy breach.
- Schedule interviews outside core hours where possible, or take leave. Early morning or late afternoon slots are often available on request.
- LinkedIn "Open to work": if used, choose visibility to recruiters only. LinkedIn notes it cannot guarantee people at your company will not see it.
- Do not let work slip. Your current manager's reference and a clean relieving process matter later; see relieving and experience letter problems.
- Check your notice period now, from your appointment letter, not from memory. It affects which roles you can realistically take; see negotiating a shorter notice period.
When the week goes wrong
Some weeks work will take everything. Have a minimum version ready so the search does not stop entirely:
Minimum week (2 hours):
- 1 tailored application
- All follow-ups that are due
- Sunday reviewTwo minimum weeks in a row is a signal to look at your capacity again rather than a failure.
A realistic horizon
A search while employed often takes several months, and no one can promise a timeline. Planning for a long search from the start reduces the temptation to spray applications in week three.
