The short answer

Withdrawing after you have signed a job offer is usually possible, but it has real costs: you may have to repay any joining bonus or relocation support already paid, you may breach terms in a signed agreement, you will damage your relationship with that employer and its recruiters, and in a small specialist market, people talk. The better options are to avoid signing two offers at all, and, if you must withdraw, to do it early, in writing and without excuses.

This article is not legal advice. What you owe depends on the documents you signed, so read them first.

What the documents can contain

Open the signed offer, appointment letter and any separate agreement, and look for these:

ClauseWhat it can mean if you withdrawWhere to look
Joining bonus clawbackRepayment of any bonus already paidOffer letter, bonus clause
Relocation or advanceRepayment of amounts paid for travel or housingRelocation policy or letter
Service agreement or bondA stated amount or cost recovery if you leave within a periodSeparate agreement
Notice after joiningOnce joined, you are an employee and notice appliesAppointment letter
ConfidentialityObligations about anything shared during onboardingNDA

If none of these exist and you have not joined or received money, the practical consequences are mostly reputational. If a bond or agreement exists, take advice from a lawyer on its specific terms before acting.

The less visible cost: reputation

Forward-deployed and senior engineering roles are a small world. The same hiring manager may later move to a company you want to join, and recruiters in agencies work with many employers. A late withdrawal is remembered longer than a polite decline before signing. Some employers also record candidates who withdraw after acceptance in their applicant systems as not eligible for rehire for a period.

A decision worksheet

Before withdrawing, write the comparison down. A fictional example for an engineer with two signed offers:

text
Offer A (signed) Offer B (new)
Role Platform engineer Forward-deployed engineer
Fixed pay (hypothetical) ₹32,00,000 ₹35,00,000
Money already received from A ₹0 -
Bond or clawback in A None -
Joining date in 3 weeks in 6 weeks
Fit with next 3 years Medium High
Would I regret not taking B? - Yes

Cost of withdrawing from A: reputational with A and its recruiter; no money.
Decision: withdraw from A now, today, by call and email.

If the numbers show only a small pay difference and similar fit, the cost of reneging is often not worth it. Ask Offer A about the thing that made B attractive before deciding.

Better options than reneging

  1. 1Do not sign while another process is live. Ask the first company for a reasonable decision window instead. Most will give a few days.
  2. 2Tell the second company you have a deadline. They may speed up, or drop out, and either tells you something.
  3. 3Ask the signed employer. If Offer B is better on role, ask A whether a similar scope is possible. Sometimes it is.
  4. 4If you already signed, decide fast. Withdrawing a week after signing is very different from withdrawing on the joining date.

How to withdraw, if you decide to

Call the recruiter or hiring manager first; then send the email the same day.

Subject: Withdrawal of acceptance - [Role] - [Your Name]

Dear Mr. Rao,

Further to our call today, I am writing to withdraw my acceptance of the offer
for the Platform Engineer role, which I signed on 2 October. I have decided to
take up a role that is closer to the client-facing work I want to do next.

I understand this is inconvenient so close to my planned joining date, and I am
sorry. I have not received any payment under the offer; if any document or
account needs closing on my side, please let me know and I will do it promptly.

Regards,
[Name]

Keep it factual. If money was paid, say you will return it and ask for the account details. Do not invent a family emergency; it is the excuse recruiters hear most and believe least.

After withdrawing

  • Update your job application tracker with the date and reason.
  • Do not accept a joining kit, laptop or access you will not use; return anything that arrived.
  • If you are serving notice at your current employer, check whether the new role's joining date changes your plan in negotiating your notice period.

The decision is easier when you already know which kind of work you want next. If that is production AI delivery for clients, compare both offers against the modules in the FDE for Professionals programme, a proposed curriculum, and see which role would let you practise more of it.
