On 3 November 2026 the Wall Street Journal reported that the most sought-after forward deployed engineers (FDEs) in the US earn $586,000 to $1.45 million a year in total pay, based on a study by the executive search firm Christian & Timbers. That is the very top of the market: about 2,000 people out of an estimated 17,000 US FDEs, and more than half of their pay is bonus and equity. A typical US FDE earns about $223,000 in total pay (Levels.fyi median, 156 reports). In India, TeamLease Digital puts entry-level FDEs at ₹18 to 25 lakh a year and mid-level at ₹30 to 45 lakh. The headline is not a fresher salary. What it does show is how badly companies want people who can take AI from a demo to daily use, and that demand is reaching India.

If you are learning this role in India, a headline like this raises two questions: is it real, and does it mean anything for you? It is real, and it does mean something, but not what the number suggests at first glance. So here is the story, the data around it, and what I would do with it if I were starting out.
Training for this role? Our FDE programme follows one long client engagement, from discovery to handover.

The story ran in the WSJ's CIO Journal on 3 November (WSJ, subscription). Since it is paywalled, the details below are as summarised the same day by Baton Rouge Business Report (Business Report).
- The figures come from a six-month study by Christian & Timbers, which surveyed more than 550 engineers, deployment leaders and executives.
- "Elite" FDEs earn $586,000 to $1.45 million a year in total compensation, with bonuses and equity making up 52% to 66% of it.
- The study defines elite narrowly: someone who has put AI agents into production with at least $10 million of documented business impact, has real consulting skill, and has built and led FDE teams.
- It estimates about 17,000 FDEs in the US, of whom about 2,000 meet that bar.
- The hiring has spread beyond tech: Target, Barclays, Bausch + Lomb and American Express have recently advertised FDE roles, and Snowflake is filling FDE jobs from its own engineering and professional services teams.
Two things are worth noticing. First, this is an executive search firm describing the top slice of a market it recruits in, so read it as the ceiling, not the average. Second, the companies named are a retailer, a bank, an eye-care company and a card issuer. Until recently FDEs worked mostly at tech firms such as Palantir and OpenAI, or at consultancies. Now ordinary large companies want them on their own payroll.
Is $1.5 million what an FDE normally earns?
No, and the gap is large. Put the elite figure next to the broader data and it sits far out on its own:

| Source | What it measures | Figure |
|---|---|---|
| Paraform (hiring platform) | Base salary on roles it filled | Midpoint $183,000; range $150,000 to $217,000 |
| Levels.fyi | Self-reported total pay, 156 US reports | Median $223,000; middle half $170,000 to $290,000; top 10% from $354,000 |
| Christian & Timbers, via WSJ | Total pay for the top ~2,000 FDEs | $586,000 to $1.45 million, 52% to 66% bonus and equity |
Base salary, total pay and equity-heavy packages are different things. Levels.fyi updated 4 Nov 2026; Paraform published 4 Sep 2026.
My read: the headline pays for a track record, not a title. The $10 million of documented impact is the part that matters. Paraform's own data shows the same pattern at a smaller scale: founding FDE roles carry about a 29% premium over roles that do not state a level, and staff or principal FDEs go up to $288,000 (Paraform). The more of a client's outcome you can show you were responsible for, the more you are paid.
Why are banks and retailers suddenly hiring FDEs?
Because they bought AI and are struggling to get it into daily work. Three moves this year show where the money is going:
- OpenAI launched the OpenAI Deployment Company on 11 May 2026 with more than $4 billion of investment, to place FDEs inside client organisations (OpenAI).
- Accenture, with Google Cloud, set up a Gemini Enterprise business group in September with the goal of adding 1,000 FDEs. Its lead, Chetna Sehgal, described the team as "FDEs, people with industry skills, functional skills and change management expertise" (CIO Dive).
- Hiring platforms see it too: Paraform reports FDE postings up 350% between the first quarter of 2025 and the first quarter of 2026 (Paraform).
Look at Sehgal's list again. Industry skills, functional skills, change management. Only one of those is engineering. That is the job: someone who can build the system and also get a bank's operations team to use it.
There is an India angle here too. American Express and Barclays both run large technology centres in India. We have not yet seen FDE-titled roles from either on our India board, but when a company decides it needs this skill at scale, its India centre is often where the team gets built. I would keep an eye on their careers pages.
What does a forward deployed engineer earn in India?
Far less than the US figures, even after converting, and well above most software jobs here. The two most useful sources broadly agree:

- TeamLease Digital told Moneycontrol that entry-level FDEs earn ₹18 to 25 lakh a year and mid-level ₹30 to 45 lakh. It also expects large IT services firms to eventually have 1.5 to 2% of their workforce in FDE roles (Moneycontrol).
- Levels.fyi shows an India median of ₹25.4 lakh in total pay, with the middle half between ₹16.2 lakh and ₹46.7 lakh (Levels.fyi). But that is from just 11 reports. When we checked on 16 October it had 20 reports and a median of ₹31.6 lakh. One page, two weeks, a ₹6 lakh swing: that is how thin the data still is.
- Indeed said its India FDE sample is too small to support a reliable median salary at all (Analytics India Magazine).
So treat every India FDE salary you see, including these, as a range from people who already hold the title. When you get an offer, ask for the fixed component separately from variable pay and stock, because a CTC figure can hide a lot. For the full breakdown by experience, employer type and city, see our FDE salary guide for India.
Who is hiring FDEs in India right now?
Demand here is rising from a small base. Indeed data shows FDE postings in India were nearly 19 times higher in June 2026 than a year earlier, about 16 times in July and more than 6 times in August (Analytics India Magazine). Those are postings, not hires, but the direction is clear.
Our own board tracks India FDE and closely related roles from company careers pages. On 5 November it listed 115 open roles at 66 companies. That is a fraction of all FDE jobs posted, since new ones go up daily, but it shows the shape of the market well:

- Who: the most roles came from Databricks (10), HighRadius (8), DevRev (8), NVIDIA (6), Prodigal (5), Kyndryl (5) and Microsoft (4). By type: 55 at product companies, 27 at startups, 24 at IT services and consulting firms, 9 at AI labs.
- Where: Bengaluru leads with 39, but Delhi NCR has 21 (Gurugram 10, Delhi 8, Noida 3), level with Mumbai and Hyderabad at 18 each. Ten are remote.
- What they ask for: client-facing work comes first (61 roles), ahead of AI agents (57), Python (37) and APIs (36). Employers are telling you the client half of the job matters as much as the code.
- Experience: of the 42 posts that state a minimum, the median is 5 years, but 9 ask for 2 years or less.
Those early-career roles are real. Prodigal posted "Forward Deployed Engineer - AI Agents" roles in Mumbai and Bengaluru in October asking for 1 year of experience. HighRadius has an FDE role in Hyderabad and Composio an applied AI engineer role in Bengaluru, both asking for 2 years. Check the live board for what is open today, because roles close and new ones arrive every week.
What does the $1.5 million actually pay for?
Read the elite definition again as a job description: AI agents in production, impact someone can measure, consulting skill, leading a team. None of that starts at the senior level. Each one has a small version you can practise in your first year:
| What the top tier has | The version you can build now |
|---|---|
| AI agents in production | One small agent or assistant that a non-engineer actually uses, with a URL, logs and a test suite |
| $10M+ of documented impact | A before-and-after number for your project: minutes saved per ticket, errors caught, questions answered |
| Consulting skill | A recorded discovery conversation: what problem, for whom, what does good look like |
| Built and led FDE teams | A clear handover: a README and runbook someone else can operate without you |
The top tier's definition is from Christian & Timbers as summarised by Business Report, 3 Nov 2026. The right-hand column is our teaching view.
This is also where freshers and career-switchers get in. Common entry routes are applied AI engineer and FDE roles at AI product startups, implementation and solutions engineering roles at software companies, the AI practices inside IT services firms, and graduate programmes at global capability centres. In every one of them, a deployed project you can demo and explain does more for you than another certificate.
How does NeuraPath train for this?
Our FDE for Freshers programme runs as one simulated client engagement over seven phases and about 280 learning hours in 6 to 7 months: software engineering foundations, SQL and APIs, production engineering and cloud, LLMs and RAG, agents with MCP and LLMOps, the consulting craft, and a capstone. Each phase ends with something you ship and a mentor reviews. No coding background is needed to start.
- Taught live online by working practitioners, with optional classroom labs at our Noida centre. Classes are on weekends and recorded, so most people keep their job.
- Phase 6 grades the client half of the job, discovery, scoping and demos, because that is what the board above shows employers ask for first.
- Eligible learners are covered by our job guarantee with minimum package assurance, or 50% of the fee back, for those meeting the attendance, deliverable and capstone criteria. Terms and conditions apply. Read the full terms.
- EMI from ₹8,000/month · full fee shared on your counselling call.
- Our first FDE batch started in August 2026 and is still in training, so we have no FDE placement record yet.
Who this is not for
- If the $1.5 million figure is the main reason you are interested. That number belongs to a few thousand people with years of shipped, measured work. Plan for the Indian ranges above.
- If you cannot give about 9 to 10 hours a week for six to seven months. The role is learnable from zero, but not in a few weekends.
- If you want a job where you never talk to a client. Half of FDE work is conversations, and they are often the hard half.
What to do this week
- 1Rewrite the elite bar for yourself. Take the four rows in the table above and write one line for each about what you could build or show in the next three months.
- 2Read three real job posts. Open our live India FDE jobs board, pick three roles, and list what each asks for that you cannot show yet. That list is your study plan.
- 3Check where you stand. Run your CV through our free FDE skill check. It takes about five minutes.

Frequently asked questions
Do forward deployed engineers really earn $1.5 million?
A small number do. The Wall Street Journal reported on 3 November 2026 that elite FDEs earn $586,000 to $1.45 million a year in total pay, based on a Christian & Timbers study. That covers about 2,000 of an estimated 17,000 US FDEs, mostly people who have shipped AI agents with large documented business impact and led FDE teams. Over half of that pay is bonus and equity.
What is the typical forward deployed engineer salary in the US?
Levels.fyi shows a US median of about $223,000 in total pay from 156 reports (updated 4 November 2026), with the middle half between $170,000 and $290,000. Paraform's hiring data puts the typical base salary midpoint at $183,000.
What is the forward deployed engineer salary in India?
TeamLease Digital reports entry-level FDEs in India earn ₹18 to 25 lakh a year and mid-level ₹30 to 45 lakh. Levels.fyi shows an India median of about ₹25.4 lakh in total pay, but from only 11 reports, so it moves a lot. These figures are for people who already hold the title.
Are companies in India hiring forward deployed engineers?
Yes. Indeed data shows FDE postings in India were nearly 19 times higher in June 2026 than a year earlier, from a small base. NeuraPath's jobs board listed 115 open FDE and related roles at 66 companies on 5 November 2026, led by Bengaluru, Delhi NCR, Mumbai and Hyderabad. That is a fraction of all FDE jobs posted.
Can a fresher become a forward deployed engineer?
Yes, though most postings ask for some experience. On our board, 9 of the 42 posts that state a minimum ask for 2 years or less, including FDE roles at Prodigal asking for 1 year. Freshers usually get in through applied AI engineer, implementation or solutions roles, IT services AI practices and GCC graduate programmes, with a deployed project they can demo.
