In short: a fresher data analyst in India usually starts at about ₹3.5 lakh to ₹5 lakh a year. AmbitionBox shows ₹3.5 to 5.2 lakh for 0 to 1 year of experience, and PayScale shows an average of ₹4,13,462 in total compensation for under one year (both read 18 Oct 2026). Delhi NCR pays a little above the national average across all experience levels, but not dramatically. What moves your first offer most is the type of employer and whether you can prove your SQL and Excel work, not the city.

I am Pankit Kumar. I lead the Data Analytics programme at NeuraPath and work as a Senior Data Scientist at Parexel. People ask me about pay within the first five minutes, and that is fair. The trouble is that the numbers floating around mix ten years of experience, CTC and base pay. So on 18 October 2026 I opened the main salary datasets and put the fresher numbers side by side.
What does a fresher data analyst earn in India?
Here is what each source says, with what it actually measures. Read the middle column before the right one.
| Source (read 18 Oct 2026) | What it measures | Fresher figure | Later figure |
|---|---|---|---|
| AmbitionBox, updated 16 Oct 2026 | Self-reported salaries, by experience band | 0 to 1 year: ₹3.5 to 5.2 lakh a year (only 30 salaries) | 1 to 3 years: ₹5.2 to 5.7 lakh (84,200 salaries) |
| PayScale, updated 10 Jul 2026 | Average total compensation, by experience | Under 1 year: ₹4,13,462 (576 salaries) | 1 to 4 years: ₹5,65,999 (1,588 salaries) |
| Indeed India, updated 9 Oct 2026 | Average base salary, all experience levels | Not split out | ₹6,27,622 average, range ₹3,10,045 to ₹12,70,488 (557 salaries) |
| Glassdoor India | Average base pay, all experience levels | Not split out | ₹8 lakh average, range ₹5 to 11 lakh |

Two things stand out.
First, the two sources that separate freshers agree with each other: roughly ₹3.5 lakh to ₹5 lakh a year, centred a little above ₹4 lakh. AmbitionBox's fresher band rests on only 30 salaries, which is thin, but PayScale's 576 salaries land in the same place.
Second, the higher averages you see quoted (₹6 lakh, ₹8 lakh) mix freshers with people who have five or eight years behind them. Indeed and Glassdoor do not split their headline figure by experience, so neither tells you what a first job pays.
All of these are pay that people reported or that job postings listed. None of them is an offer, and none of them is what we promise you.
Is the number on the offer letter what you take home?
No, and this is where most freshers get confused when comparing offers. Three different numbers get called "salary":
- CTC (cost to company) is everything the employer spends on you in a year. It often includes the employer's PF contribution, gratuity, insurance and a variable bonus you may or may not get in full.
- Fixed pay is what you are paid every month regardless of performance.
- In-hand is what reaches your bank account after your own PF contribution, professional tax where your state charges it, and income tax.
An illustrative example, not a real offer: say a letter shows ₹4,50,000 CTC. Inside it sit a ₹30,000 performance bonus and ₹21,600 of employer PF (12% of a ₹15,000 monthly basic). That leaves about ₹3,98,400 of fixed pay, or roughly ₹33,200 a month. Take out your own PF of ₹1,800 a month and you are near ₹31,400 in hand, before any other deductions. So a "4.5 LPA" job pays closer to ₹31,000 a month in the bank.

When you compare two offers, compare fixed pay with fixed pay. A ₹4.2 lakh offer with no variable component can beat a ₹4.8 lakh offer with a large one. We have a separate piece on answering the salary expectations question with fixed pay if you are at that stage.
Does Delhi NCR pay freshers more?
A little, on average, and only across all experience levels.
- Indeed lists Noida at ₹7,66,414 and Gurgaon at ₹7,63,790 a year, against ₹6,27,622 for India as a whole (updated 9 Oct 2026). Both sit in Indeed's top three cities, just behind Bengaluru at ₹7,76,641.
- AmbitionBox's Noida page (5,900 salaries, updated 17 Oct 2026) says Noida "pays at par with the India avg." Its bands for Noida are ₹5.6 to 6.2 lakh at 1 to 3 years and ₹7.1 to 7.9 lakh at 3 to 6 years. It shows no separate 0 to 1 year band for Noida, which tells you how few fresher salaries get reported city by city.
- For New Delhi, AmbitionBox shows ₹6.8 to 7.5 lakh across all experience (11,000 salaries).
Now the less comfortable part. Naukri's JobSpeak report for September 2026 (published 6 Oct 2026) found white-collar hiring in Delhi NCR down 6% on a year earlier, while fresher hiring across India was roughly flat at +1%. Banking and financial services was one of the sectors adding freshers, up 14% year on year. In plain terms: NCR is a good place to be an analyst, but it is not a market where any fresher with a certificate walks into a job right now. Employers are choosing.
If you live in Noida, Ghaziabad or Delhi, do not move cities for a first analyst job on salary alone. The gap between employers is much bigger than the gap between cities.
See the whole programme first. Our Data Analytics with Generative AI brochure has all seven modules, the 14 portfolio pieces and both batch timings in 12 pages.
Get the free brochureWhy do two freshers get such different offers?
Look at AmbitionBox's company averages for the data analyst title (all experience levels, read 18 Oct 2026). TCS shows ₹4.2 to 4.7 lakh, Wipro ₹4.1 to 4.5 lakh and Cognizant ₹4.2 to 4.6 lakh. Deloitte shows ₹7.1 to 7.9 lakh. Across industries, financial services shows ₹9.2 to 10.2 lakh and IT services ₹5.8 to 6.4 lakh. Same title, very different pay.
Three things usually decide which end a fresher lands at.
The kind of employer. Large IT services firms hire analysts in volume at standard bands. Consulting firms, banks, fintechs and product companies hire fewer, test harder and pay more. Your first job does not lock you in, but it sets the base for your first raise.
Whether your SQL is real. Almost every analyst screen includes a SQL or Excel task. The candidates who get the better offers are the ones who get the right number and can say why it is right.
Here is something from our own teaching material that shows what I mean. In our analyst lab we use a small, made-up set of January orders. Eight completed orders add up to ₹1,040. A natural-looking SQL query that joins orders to their line items returns ₹1,710, because every order is counted once per item. A query that joins to the customer table drops an order whose customer record is missing and returns ₹950. A query using SUM(DISTINCT ...) returns ₹820. Four confident answers, one correct. An AI assistant will happily write any of the three wrong queries for you. You can see the full worked exercise in our post on reconciling two conflicting revenue numbers. An interviewer who gives you a task like this is not testing whether you can write SQL. They are testing whether you check.

Whether you can show work. A fresher with two dashboards, a SQL case study and a short written note on how they verified their numbers gets a different conversation from a fresher with a certificate. The note matters more than people think, because it is the closest thing a fresher has to experience.
Where do 20 to 30 LPA salaries come from?
On AmbitionBox, even analysts with 6 to 9 years of experience average ₹7.7 to 11.3 lakh (a small sample of 58 salaries). Figures in the 20 to 30 lakh range do exist, but they belong to senior analysts, analytics managers, data scientists and people who moved into specialist or leadership roles, usually after several years. They are not a first offer for a fresher, and anyone who tells you otherwise should show you the offer letters.
That does not make it a poor career. The money comes from growth over the first three to five years and from moving into roles such as senior analyst, analytics engineer or data scientist.
Can a B.Com, BBA or BA graduate get the same starting pay?
Yes. In the hiring screens I have seen, the degree matters at the eligibility line and much less afterwards. What gets tested is whether you can pull the right rows, check them and explain the result to someone who does not code.
Many of the questions our counsellors logged this month came from commerce and arts students, often still in college, who wanted to know whether a non-technical degree would hold them back and how to explain the plan at home. My honest answer: a commerce background is an advantage on the business side. You already know what margin, receivables and reconciliation mean. You need to prove the technical side with projects, starting with Excel and SQL. Our post on the first analyst job after B.Com, BBA, BA or B.Sc maps each degree to the entry roles that fit it first.
If it helps the conversation at home, show your parents the table on this page.
How our Data Analytics programme fits into this
I teach the Data Analytics with Generative AI programme myself, alongside my work as a Senior Data Scientist at Parexel. It is taught live online by working practitioners, with optional classroom labs at our Noida centre, and every session is recorded.
The order follows what employers test: Excel, SQL and Power BI first, then Python, then statistics, modelling and generative AI. There are 118 live hours. You can take it on weekdays at 15 live hours a week over two months, or on weekends at 8 live hours a week over three to four months if you are working. You build 14 portfolio pieces, including two Power BI dashboards, a SQL case study, four Pandas case studies and an end-to-end capstone you present on demo day.
The part I care most about is the verification work. In the generative AI module you build a RAG assistant over a business dataset and an AI agent that runs a recurring report, and then you write a verification protocol: how you prove the AI's numbers before anyone acts on them. That is the ₹1,040-versus-₹1,710 problem above, done properly, and it is the skill that makes a fresher worth more in an interview.
The fee is ₹90,000 (inclusive of GST) · EMI from ₹4,000/month. Eligible learners are covered by our job guarantee with minimum package assurance, or 50% of the fee back, for those meeting the attendance, deliverable and capstone criteria. Terms and conditions apply. The conditions are written out in full in our job guarantee terms: at least 70% in every assessment, at least 80% live attendance, four or more logged job applications a week, fees settled, and attending the interviews we arrange, within six months of certification. Read them before you pay.
Who this is not for
- People who want a guaranteed ₹20 lakh first job. No honest course can give you that, and the data above shows why.
- People who cannot give it the hours. Eight live hours a week plus practice is the minimum on the weekend batch. If your month is already full, wait for a quieter one.
- People who dislike checking their own work. Analysis is mostly checking. If finding your own mistakes feels like a waste of time, this job will frustrate you.
- People who only want a certificate. Employers shortlist on what you can show and explain, not on the certificate.
What to do this week
- 1Work out your fixed-pay number. Take any offer or job ad you have seen, split the CTC into fixed, variable and PF, and write down the monthly in-hand. Do it once and you will read every offer differently.
- 2Do one SQL task and check it. Take any public dataset, total a column two different ways, and find out why the numbers differ if they do. That habit is what interviews test.
- 3Check where you stand. Run your CV through our free skill check. It shows which data analyst requirements you already meet and which you do not.

Frequently asked questions
What is the salary of a data analyst fresher in India?
Most datasets put a fresher between about ₹3.5 lakh and ₹5.2 lakh a year. AmbitionBox shows ₹3.5 to 5.2 lakh for 0 to 1 year (a small sample of 30 salaries), and PayScale shows an average total compensation of ₹4,13,462 for under one year of experience (576 salaries). Both read on 18 Oct 2026. Treat these as reported pay, not an offer.
Is ₹4 LPA a good starting salary for a data analyst?
It is in line with what freshers report. It sits inside AmbitionBox's 0 to 1 year band and close to PayScale's entry-level average. Before you compare, check how much of it is fixed pay and how much is variable, PF and benefits.
Do data analysts in Noida and Gurugram earn more?
Slightly, on average and across all experience levels. Indeed shows Noida at ₹7,66,414 and Gurgaon at ₹7,63,790 against an India average of ₹6,27,622 (updated 9 Oct 2026). AmbitionBox says Noida pays at par with the India average. Neither gives a reliable NCR figure for freshers alone.
Can a B.Com graduate become a data analyst?
Yes. Employers screening junior analysts mostly test whether you can pull the right numbers in Excel and SQL, check them and explain them. A commerce background helps with the business side; you need to show the technical side with projects.
How fast does a data analyst's salary grow?
AmbitionBox's bands rise from ₹3.5 to 5.2 lakh at 0 to 1 year to ₹5.2 to 5.7 lakh at 1 to 3 years and ₹7.2 to 7.9 lakh at 3 to 6 years (read 18 Oct 2026). Moving into senior analyst, analytics engineering or data science roles is where larger jumps usually come from.
