Forward Deployed Engineer Salary in India (2026): What Freshers and Seniors Really Earn

If you have looked this up before, you have probably seen numbers that do not agree. Glassdoor's average sits around ₹13 lakh. Levels.fyi's median is more than double that. One startup blog says ₹18 lakh for freshers and another says ₹10. None of them is lying. They are measuring different groups of people, and once you know which group you are in, the numbers start to make sense.

I teach an FDE course, so take this as one practitioner's reading. I have tried to show where each figure comes from, so you can check it rather than trust me.

FDE salary in India by experience and employer

The split by employer matters more than anything else on this page. The same title, Forward Deployed Engineer, is used by a large Indian IT services company staffing client projects and by a funded AI startup whose whole business depends on getting its product working inside a customer's systems. The work overlaps. The pay often does not.

Why Glassdoor and Levels.fyi disagree

Both sites rely on people reporting their own pay, and both have small samples for a title this new. The difference is who reports.

So if you are a fresher joining a services company, the Glassdoor figure is closer to your reality. If you are an engineer with a few years' experience interviewing at a product company or an AI startup, look at Levels.fyi. Neither tells you what a strong candidate can negotiate.

What a fresher can realistically expect

This is the question most people searching this page actually have, so here is the plain answer. Very few FDE jobs in India are open to freshers. On 16 October 2026 our jobs board had 139 FDE and closely related openings, and only 6 were labelled entry level. Most wanted at least two years of experience.

That does not mean you cannot get there. It means the usual route for a fresher is one step to the side first: an associate FDE, solutions engineer, implementation engineer or junior AI engineer role, and then the FDE title after a year or two of shipping real systems for customers. The freshers who land at the top of these bands almost always have one thing in common: something deployed that they can demo and explain to a non-technical person. A certificate on its own rarely moves the number.

What that CTC means per month in hand

CTC is not what lands in your account. Here is a rough monthly take-home for three common offers, so you can compare an offer letter with your rent.

If a startup offer includes stock, value it at zero when comparing monthly pay, and treat anything it is worth later as a bonus.

Where the FDE jobs are in India

Of the 139 openings we tracked on 16 October 2026, Bengaluru had 45, Mumbai 26 and Hyderabad 20. Across NCR there were 24 (Gurugram 12, Delhi 9, Noida 3), with Pune and Chennai at 7 each. Only 11 were fully remote.

By employer, 61 were at product companies, 35 at startups, 34 at services or consulting firms and 9 at AI labs. Pay differs more between those groups than between cities. A Hyderabad GCC and a Gurugram GCC pay in a similar range; a Bengaluru services firm and a Bengaluru AI startup often do not.

FDE pay compared with software engineers and data scientists

At entry level an FDE at a product company or AI startup usually earns a little more than a software engineer or data scientist hired into the same company, because the role also needs client-facing skills that are hard to find. At senior levels the gap closes, and the ceiling depends far more on the company than on the title. The skills that move the number

We counted the skills named in those 139 postings. Client-facing work came first, in 66 of them. Then AI agents (57), AWS (39), Python (38), APIs (37), Azure (35), LLMs (33) and RAG (31). Docker, TypeScript and Kubernetes followed.

Two things stand out. The most requested skill is not technical at all, and it is the one engineers practise least. And most of the technical list is ordinary engineering, cloud, APIs and Python, with the AI layer on top. If you want to be paid at the top of the band, be the person who can deploy the boring parts reliably and then explain the result to the customer's manager.

How to earn at the top of the range

1. 1Ship something to a live URL. A deployed service with tests and monitoring is worth more in an interview than three notebooks.
2. 2Build one AI system you can defend: a RAG assistant or an agent, with an evaluation that shows where it fails.
3. 3Practise the client conversation. Record yourself explaining a project to someone non-technical, then watch it.
4. 4Apply to product companies and startups, not only services firms, once you have that portfolio. That single choice changes the band more than another certificate.
