The short answer

In short: India's big IT services firms have announced plans for thousands of Forward Deployed Engineers — TCS 8,900 this year, Infosys 6,000 over the next few years, Wipro 10,000 within 18 months — while a staffing firm estimates only about 1,300–1,500 narrowly defined FDEs are available to hire. The job is mostly integration and customer work, not pure coding; the big AI-company postings want 3+ years; and the fresher door is the services firms' FDE tracks.

TCS plans 8,900 FDEs, Infosys 6,000, about 1,500 available to hire

Every month we read the FDE job postings, earnings-call quotes and trade press so you don't have to. This is the October edition. Every number links to where it came from, and where a number comes from a staffing firm or a course vendor, we say so.

1. The gap: thousands of seats, a few thousand people

The Economic Times reported on 8 September that TCS wants to hire 8,900 FDEs this year, Infosys up to 6,000, and Wipro 10,000 within 18 months — and that HCLTech plans for 15–20% of its fresher hiring to be FDE roles (source). Quess Corp, a staffing firm, told the paper only "around 1,300-1,500 'narrowly defined' FDEs are available for hire currently."

We are building a team of frontier engineers (FDEs) to support the client work. Our plan is to have 6,000 frontier engineers over the next few years. — Salil Parekh, CEO, Infosys (Moneycontrol, 23 Jul 2026)
Bar chart: Wipro 10,000 in 18 months, TCS 8,900 this year, Infosys 6,000 over a few years, versus about 1,300 to 1,500 FDEs available today
Each plan has its own time window, so they are not one combined number. The supply figure is a staffing-firm estimate.

Two more data points from the ground, both from ETHRWorld on 30 September (source): CIEL HR, another staffing firm, says FDE hiring grew 130% over the past year with 52 organisations recruiting as of July, and that 3–5 years' experience is the sweet spot; Tredence has about 60 FDEs and expects about 200 within a year.

2. The "800%" number, read honestly

You will see "FDE demand up 800%" everywhere, including on our own pages. It comes from TeamLease Digital, covers the first three quarters of 2025, and TeamLease itself says "this is on a small base." The same data counted 250 to 270 open FDE positions in India at any given time (source). The "729%" headline that followed is US Indeed data, not India.

So the honest reading is: the role is growing very fast from a small number, and the big announced plans are what make 2026 different — not the percentage.

3. What the job actually is

Quick poll

What share of a Forward Deployed Engineer's week is writing code?

About 25% coding, 50% integration and plumbing, 25% meetings and customer hand-holding

Gergely Orosz of The Pragmatic Engineer translated a Google Cloud FDE ad "into plain English" as: "You are a contractor who codes at a customer's office" — roughly 25% coding, 50% integration, 25% customer (source). It is a joke with a point. Here is what the postings themselves say a week looks like:

A week in the job, in employers' words

Find the real problem before writing a line

You sit with the customer's team and turn a vague 'we want AI' into a scoped problem with a success measure.

“Own discovery, technical scoping, system design, build, and production rollout.”
— OpenAI FDE posting, Sep 2026

4. What employers literally ask for

Skills named across six FDE postings we read in September 2026 (Cursor, OpenAI, Anthropic, Ramp and two Databricks India roles)
SkillPostings askingNote
Customer discovery & stakeholder communication6 of 6Every single one
Production LLMs, GenAI and agents6 of 6Databricks names RAG, multi-agent, Text2SQL
Python4 of 6 by nameImplied in the others
TypeScript / JavaScript4 of 6Cursor, OpenAI, Anthropic, Databricks
Evaluations4 of 6Measuring whether the AI is right

Cloud (AWS / Azure / GCP)2 of 6Both Databricks roles

Experience asked: Ramp 3+ years (preferred), Anthropic 4+, OpenAI 5+, Databricks Senior 6+. None of these six is a fresher role.

5. Who is hiring FDEs in India right now

  • Cursor posted "Forward Deployed Engineer - India" on 28 September, based in Bengaluru, New Delhi and Mumbai: "This is not a demo role. You are responsible for systems that work in the real world." (posting)
  • Databricks lists FDE roles in Bengaluru, Delhi, Mumbai, Pune and remote India, including a Senior FDE where "FDEs are billable" (posting).
  • IT services firms — TCS, Infosys, Wipro, HCLTech — are building FDE benches at scale, and this is where fresher hiring into the title is happening.
  • Services and analytics firms such as Tredence, Coforge (20 FDEs, planning 100) and EPAM (about 50 in India, planning 100), per the ETHRWorld and Rediff reports above.

6. The case against the hype

We'd rather you hear this from us. Gartner predicts "roughly 70% of vendor-led AI engineering excursions will be abandoned by 2028." DXC announced plans in June to train tens of thousands of Claude-certified FDEs; on 31 July it had 86. And a Gartner analyst warns that "many providers now use 'forward deployed' as a label for implementation, professional services, solution engineering" — some carefully, "others because it sounds more strategic" (source).

Tap a myth to flip it

What survives a correction is the skill underneath the title: making AI work inside a real business's systems, and being trusted by the people who use it. That is worth learning whatever the job ad calls it.

7. Pay in India: what the reports actually say

Reported FDE pay in India — who said it, and what it covers
SourceFigureWhat it covers
CIEL HR (staffing firm), ETHRWorld, 30 Sep 2026₹35–45 lakh"Early-stage FDE roles" — people already in the title
CIEL HR, same report₹70–90 lakhExperienced specialists
TeamLease Digital, Rediff, 15 Jun 2026about ₹40 lakhExperienced FDEs; 23.7% above customer support engineers

These are staffing-firm figures for people already doing the job, mostly with 3–5 years' experience. They are not starting salaries for freshers and not a promise of any outcome. Neither Cursor nor Databricks publishes pay on its India postings.

Frequently asked questions

How many Forward Deployed Engineers are Indian IT companies hiring?

As reported in September 2026, TCS plans to hire 8,900 FDEs this year, Infosys 6,000 over the next few years and Wipro 10,000 within 18 months, while HCLTech plans 15–20% of its fresher hiring as FDE roles. These are company plans with different time windows, not one combined number.

Can a fresher become a Forward Deployed Engineer?

Yes, but usually not at an AI lab first: the Cursor, OpenAI, Anthropic and Databricks postings we read ask for 3 to 6+ years. The fresher entry point is the FDE tracks at IT services firms. You need software foundations first, then production AI and client skills.

Is FDE mostly a coding job?

No. Coding matters, but most of the work is integrating AI into a customer's existing systems and working with their team. One widely shared reading puts it at roughly a quarter coding, half integration and a quarter customer work.

Is the 800% FDE growth figure real?

It is TeamLease Digital data for the first three quarters of 2025, and TeamLease says it is on a small base: about 250–270 open FDE positions in India at any one time. The large 2026 hiring plans announced by IT services firms are the bigger change.
