The short answer

To check whether an off-campus drive is genuine, confirm the drive on the company's own careers page or official social account, check that the email came from the company's domain or a known hiring partner, verify the venue exists and is connected to the company or a recognised college, and treat any request for payment, a "registration fee" or bank details as a reason to stop. Genuine employers do not charge candidates to attend a recruitment drive.

Off-campus drives are a legitimate hiring route for freshers, especially in large IT services and operations firms. They are also copied by fraudsters because freshers are eager and the format involves forwarded messages. The checks below take about fifteen minutes.

The ten-point checklist

Work through it for every invitation, forwarded message or post.

#CheckHowRed flag
1Is the drive on the company's careers site?Type the company's site address yourself; do not use the link in the messageNothing on the official site or official LinkedIn page
2Sender's email domainLook at the part after @Free email service, or a look-alike domain with an extra letter or hyphen
3Registration linkHover or long-press to see the full URLShort links, form builders asking for Aadhaar or bank details
4Payment requestAny mention of fee, deposit, training charge, kit, laptopAny amount, for any reason
5Eligibility statedDegree, year of passing, marks criteria"All graduates, any stream, any year, no test"
6VenueSearch the address on a map; check whether it is a college, the company's office or a known event venueResidential flat, hotel room booked by an individual, or vague area only
7Contact personName and role; check on LinkedInOnly a WhatsApp number, no name
8Selection process describedTest, technical round, HR round"Direct joining", "spot offer letter" before any assessment
9Pay mentionedRealistic for a fresher roleUnusually high pay for no skills, "work from home, earn daily"
10PressureDeadline to register"Only 10 seats left, pay within 2 hours"

One red flag deserves caution; the payment flag alone is enough to stop.

Checking the email properly

Company names can be imitated in the display name. The address itself matters:

text
Display name: ExampleTech Careers (anyone can set this)
Actual sender: hr.exampletech.recruit@gmail.com (free email: red flag)
Actual sender: careers@examp1etech-jobs.com (look-alike domain: red flag)

ExampleTech is a made-up company; the pattern is what matters. If in doubt, find the company's official recruitment contact from its website and ask whether the drive is genuine.

Pool campus drives: verify through the college

Many off-campus drives are run as pool campus events hosted at a college for students of several institutions. To verify:

  1. 1Find the host college's official website and placement cell contact.
  2. 2Call or email the placement cell and ask whether they are hosting the drive on that date.
  3. 3Ask your own college's placement cell if they received the same notice.

A genuine pool drive is usually known to more than one placement office.

What to carry to a genuine drive

Once verified, prepare the documents drives commonly ask for. Check the invitation, since requirements vary:

  • Several printed copies of your resume
  • A government photo ID and its photocopy
  • Marksheets and degree or provisional certificate, originals and photocopies
  • Passport-size photographs
  • The registration confirmation, printed or on your phone
  • A pen, and water, because drives can run for many hours

Do not hand over original certificates to be "kept for verification". Show originals, hand over photocopies. Our guide to walk-in interviews covers the day itself.

If something feels wrong on the day

  • If you are asked to pay at the venue, leave. A genuine drive will not ask.
  • Do not share OTPs, UPI PINs or card details with anyone at a drive, for any reason.
  • If you already paid or shared financial details, act quickly: the national cyber crime helpline is 1930, and complaints can be filed at cybercrime.gov.in. Suspected fraud calls, SMS or WhatsApp messages can be reported through the Chakshu facility on the Department of Telecommunications' Sanchar Saathi portal.

The wider pattern of fee-based job fraud, fake offer letters and task scams is covered in job scams in India.

Keep a record either way

Add each drive to your tracker with the source, the verification result and the outcome. Over time you will recognise which channels bring genuine invitations. Preparing a strong resume and a couple of well-documented projects, as in the Data Analyst programme, makes you less dependent on any single drive.
