A software engineer at a product company builds and maintains one product used by many customers. A forward deployed engineer (FDE) builds inside one customer's systems until that product actually works there, and spends a large share of the week with the customer. The IT-services onsite or implementation role looks similar from outside, but usually configures someone else's product to a fixed scope, while an FDE writes production code and is expected to change the plan when the real problem turns out to be different. Choose SDE for depth in one codebase, FDE for breadth and client ownership; moving back to SDE later is realistic if you keep writing production code.
The question behind this search is usually not "what is the difference?" It is a worry: is FDE a real engineering job, or a services job with a fashionable name, and will taking it trap me away from product engineering? It is a fair worry in India, where going "onsite" for an implementation project is a familiar career path, and not always one that builds engineering skill. I have taught at three training brands and now lead our FDE programme, and this is the comparison I give people who ask me directly. If you would like to see which side your resume already leans towards, the free resume check takes about five minutes.
How I researched this: the posting data comes from our India FDE jobs database (138 roles at 84 companies on 12 Oct 2026), salary ranges only from named postings or labelled Reddit anecdotes, and the role descriptions from how the work is set up in our own course. That database is the set we track from employers' careers pages, not every FDE job in India.
What is the actual difference in the work?
An SDE goes deep into one codebase that the company owns. An FDE goes wide across a customer's systems that nobody fully owns. The IT-services implementation engineer works inside a scope someone else signed.
| Product SDE | Forward deployed engineer | IT-services onsite / implementation | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who you build for | Your company's product, used by many customers | One customer at a time, using your company's product | A client, usually on a third-party platform |
| What you ship | Features and fixes in one codebase | Integrations, agents, pipelines and fixes inside the client's environment | Configuration, customisation and data migration to a signed scope |
| How the scope is set | Product managers and the roadmap | You discover it with the client, and it changes | Fixed in a contract before you arrive |
| Time with the client | Little; you see users through data and tickets | A large share of the week | High, often daily |
| Travel | Rare | Depends on the company; ask, because it varies widely | Common; "onsite" is often literal |
| Depth vs breadth | Deep in one stack | Broad: APIs, data, cloud, AI, security, people | Deep in one vendor product |
| What success looks like | The product gets better for everyone | It works in production for this client, and the fix feeds back into the product | Delivered on time to scope |
| Your resume after two years | Systems you designed and own | Deployments you shipped, and the problems you found at real clients | Projects delivered on a named platform |
Titles vary by company. Some roles called FDE are implementation jobs, and some implementation roles involve real engineering. Read the posting, then ask the questions in the next section.
The row that matters most is how the scope is set. In a good FDE role you are paid to notice that what the client asked for is not what they need, and to change course. In a typical implementation project, noticing that is a change request, and it goes to someone else. That single difference decides whether you grow as an engineer.
Is FDE just the IT-services onsite role with a new name?
Sometimes, yes. The title has become popular, and some roles carrying it are implementation work. You find out from the posting and three questions in the interview, not from the title.
Our database shows the title spreading well beyond AI startups. Kyndryl, an IT-services company, lists a Forward Deployed Engineer in Gurugram asking for two years (posted 11 Sep 2026). LTM lists an FDE role whose title names a vendor product, "Field Service Cloud", with a printed range of ₹30–50 LPA (Google Jobs listing, read 11 Oct 2026). A title that names one vendor's product often signals implementation on that product. That can be a good job. It is just a different job.
Ask these in the interview. After go-live, who owns the code I wrote? What share of my week is writing code versus configuring a platform? When I find that the client needs something different from the signed scope, what happens? A real FDE role answers "you", "most of it" and "you raise it and we change the plan". If you are also weighing pre-sales roles, our comparison of solutions engineer vs forward deployed engineer uses one customer request to show who does what.
See what Indian FDE postings actually ask for: our jobs report breaks down 138 tracked roles by level, experience and skill.
Read the India FDE jobs reportDo FDEs code less than software engineers?
Less inside one codebase, not less overall, in a role that deserves the title. The code is different: more integration, more debugging other people's systems, less long-term design of your own.
You can see it in how we teach the role. Our FDE-AUG-2026 batch began on 16 Aug 2026, and sessions 02 to 08 are the seven parts of "Python: Zero to Engineer". Seven of the first eight sessions are Python, because a client will not wait while you learn to read a stack trace.
The postings say the same thing. Of our 138 listings, 36 name Python, 35 name APIs, 22 name Docker and 19 name TypeScript. Client-facing work is named in 67, which tells you the job adds a second skill on top of the code, not in place of it. If a role you are offered is mostly meetings and slide decks, it is not the FDE role this article is about.
Who earns more in India, an FDE or a software engineer?
Nobody can answer that reliably yet, and I would be suspicious of anyone who gives you one confident number. There is no authoritative India FDE salary survey. What exists are a few named postings and some anecdotes.
The named postings that print a range sit high, and they vary enormously. Read on Google Jobs on 11 Oct 2026: Weekday AI (YC W21), FDE, Bengaluru, ₹14–30 LPA; LTM, FDE (Field Service Cloud), Uttar Pradesh, ₹30–50 LPA; Cartesia, FDE (India), Karnataka, ₹70–90 LPA. On Reddit, in an r/developersIndia thread about a UnifyApps fresher FDE interview, one commenter said "mostly 12/14 LPA" and another "18-22 LPA for freshers". Those are anonymous, unverified anecdotes.
I have no sourced SDE band to set beside these, so I will not invent one. SDE pay in India depends heavily on the company: a product company and a services firm can pay the same title very differently. My advice is not to choose between these roles on pay. Within a few years, the difference between a strong and an average engineer in either role is larger than the difference between the roles. For more on the FDE side, see is FDE a good career?.
Is FDE harder than software engineering?
Harder in a different direction. An SDE faces depth: performance, scale, long-lived design. An FDE faces ambiguity and people: unclear requirements, systems you cannot change, and someone senior waiting for the fix.
Employers treat FDE as a role you grow into. Of the 43 postings in our database that state a minimum experience, the median is five years, and only 2 ask for a year or less. Of 138 roles, 6 are entry level, 70 mid, 53 senior and 9 leadership. Those figures do not mean the work is beyond a fresher. They mean companies want evidence that you can be trusted alone in front of a client, and that evidence usually comes from shipped work.
Demand is growing fast, but read the numbers carefully. Indeed counted 5,330 FDE postings in April 2026, up from 643 a year earlier, according to Business Insider, which did not say which country those counts cover. TeamLease Digital reported roughly 800% growth in Indian demand over Q1 to Q3 2025, from a small base (Business Standard). Fast growth from a small base still means a small number of roles.
What does training for the FDE side look like?
If you decide FDE is the direction, our FDE for Freshers programme teaches it from zero coding over 6–7 months: software engineering first, then data and APIs, deployment, GenAI and agents, and finally the client-facing craft. It is taught live online by working practitioners, with optional classroom labs at our Noida centre. I lead it; my day job is Senior Data Scientist at Parexel, a Goldman Sachs–backed company, after about ten years in data science and AI, and I have taught as a freelance trainer at BIA, AnalytixLabs and Scaler. Ishaan Sharma, a Senior Data Scientist at Nuvo AI (Meril Group), is our co-instructor for AI and GenAI. One real project from the course: in Phase 2 you build an integration service that pulls from a database and a live third-party API, cleans and joins the data, and serves it through your own API. That is exactly the kind of code an FDE writes and an implementation role rarely does.
EMI starts from ₹8,000/month; the full fee is shared on a free counselling call. Eligible learners are covered by our job guarantee with minimum package assurance, or 50% of the fee back, for those meeting the attendance, deliverable and capstone criteria. Terms and conditions apply. The conditions include at least 70% in every assessment, at least 80% live attendance, four or more logged job applications a week, settled fees and attending the interviews we arrange, within six months of certification; the minimum package and full conditions are in our published terms. Who this is not for: if you already know you want deep product engineering in one codebase, a DSA-and-systems SDE path will serve you better than an FDE course. And if you dislike talking to clients, no course will change that, so do not pay for one hoping it will.
Can you switch back to SDE after being an FDE?
Yes, if your FDE years produced code you can point to. The risk is not the title. It is spending two years in a role that turned out to be configuration, after which an SDE interviewer sees a gap.
Protect the option deliberately. Keep a list of systems you built, not clients you served. Keep your DSA from going stale with a little practice each month. And if your FDE role drifts into pure implementation, treat that as the signal to move. Going the other way, from SDE to FDE, is easier still, because the engineering depth transfers and the client craft can be learned on the job. This decision matrix is how I would weigh the three options:
| If this matters most to you | Product SDE | Forward deployed engineer | IT-services onsite / implementation |
|---|---|---|---|
| You want to avoid travel | Best fit | Ask first; varies widely | Weakest fit |
| You want depth in one system | Best fit | Weaker; you trade depth for breadth | Depth in one vendor product |
| You enjoy client conversations | Weakest fit | Best fit | Good fit |
| You want to keep switching back open | The default; easy | Easy if you keep shipping code | Harder after several years of configuration |
| You are a fresher choosing a first job | Most openings | Few entry openings; strong proof needed | Many openings; check how much code you write |
| You want to see your work used quickly | Slower; release cycles | Fast; often the same week | Fast, within the project |
An opinion matrix from how the roles are typically set up, not a ranking of employers. A specific company's role can sit anywhere on it.
Which should a fresher pick first?
Take whichever good engineering job you can get, and steer it towards FDE if that is what you want. Entry-level FDE openings exist but are rare, so for many freshers the realistic first step is an SDE, backend or implementation role with real code in it.
Rare is not never. Prodigal lists a Forward Deployed Engineer – AI Agents in Mumbai at one year (posted 8 Oct 2026), and AiStudio lists one at one year (posted 3 Sep 2026). If you aim for those, your portfolio has to do the work that experience normally does. The FDE roadmap lays out the projects in order, FDE jobs for freshers in India covers the fresher openings in detail, and the interview questions guide shows what the client rounds test.
What to do this week
- 1Open ten postings on our live FDE jobs board and sort them into three piles using the comparison table: real FDE, implementation, unclear.
- 2For the unclear pile, write down the three interview questions from this article so you can ask them.
- 3List the code you have shipped that someone else used. If the list is empty, that decides your next month, whichever role you choose.
- 4Talk to one person in each role, an SDE and someone in an onsite or implementation job, and ask what their last week actually looked like.
Frequently asked questions
Who earns more in India, a forward deployed engineer or a software engineer?
There is no reliable survey that answers this. A few named FDE postings print high ranges, such as Weekday AI's ₹14–30 LPA in Bengaluru (Google Jobs, read 11 Oct 2026), but pay for both roles depends heavily on the company. Choose on the work you want, not on a headline number.
Is forward deployed engineering just an onsite services job with a new name?
Some roles with the title are implementation work, so read the posting. A real FDE writes production code inside the client's environment, owns it after go-live and is expected to change the plan when the real problem differs. Ask who owns your code after go-live and how much of the week is coding versus configuration.
Can I switch back to software engineering after being an FDE?
Yes, if your FDE work produced systems you built and can explain. Keep a list of shipped code rather than clients served, keep your DSA from going stale, and move on if the role drifts into pure configuration.
Do forward deployed engineers code less than software engineers?
In a genuine FDE role you still code a lot, but across many systems rather than deep in one. The work leans towards integrations, data pipelines, agents and debugging other people's systems, with client communication added on top of the engineering rather than replacing it.
Is FDE a good first job for a fresher in India?
It can be, but entry-level FDE openings are rare. Only 2 of the 43 postings in our database that state a minimum experience ask for a year or less. Many freshers do better taking an engineering job with real code first and building an FDE portfolio alongside it.
