Rarely, but not never. Of the 138 open FDE and related roles we track in India (snapshot 12 Oct 2026), 6 are entry level, and of the 43 postings that state a minimum experience only 2 ask for a year or less; the median is 5 years. Freshers who get in usually come through those few entry postings, Applied AI Engineer titles or adjacent implementation roles, with shipped projects to show.
If you're in your final year or just out of college, you've probably had this experience. You read that the forward deployed engineer is one of the best entry points into AI, you open LinkedIn, and almost every posting wants three to five years. So which is it? I didn't want to answer that from opinion, so I went through the postings we track and counted. Here is what they actually ask for, the six roles a near-fresher could apply to today, and what I'd build in the next 90 days in your place.
How I researched this: the figures come from our FDE jobs database, built from employers' own careers-page feeds plus a few hand-checked public listings, snapshot 12 Oct 2026. It is the set we track, not every FDE job in India, and new roles appear daily. Job-board counts were read on 11 Oct 2026.
Can a fresher get a forward deployed engineer job in India?
Yes, but you are competing for a small slice of the market, and the honest word is rarely. On 12 Oct 2026 we tracked 138 open FDE and related roles at 84 companies, 103 of them carrying the Forward Deployed Engineer title. Six were entry level.
| Measure | Postings |

Two things in that table matter more than the headline. First, most postings (95 of the 138) don't state a minimum at all. A posting that doesn't name a number is one you can apply to if your work is strong, and I'd treat it that way. Second, the 2–3 year band is the largest group among those that do. A 2-year ask is a filter for evidence. A fresher with a deployed project and a clear write-up gets read where a fresher with only a certificate does not.
For scale, the big job boards look far busier. On 11 Oct 2026 LinkedIn showed 200+ results for the exact title in India, 51 of them posted in the past 7 days, and Naukri showed 600 on a broad match. Those counts include duplicates and loose matches, so don't read them as 600 FDE jobs. They do tell you new postings arrive every week, which is why a weekly habit of checking beats one big search.
Which FDE postings in India are open to freshers right now?
These six postings ask for two years or less. They are real, named and dated, and by the time you read this some will have closed.
| Company | Title | City | Minimum experience | Posted |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Prodigal | Forward Deployed Engineer – AI Agents | Mumbai | 1 year | 8 Oct 2026 |
| AiStudio | Forward Deployed Engineer | Remote / not stated | 1 year | 3 Sep 2026 |
| Kyndryl | Forward Deployed Engineer | Gurugram | 2 years | 11 Sep 2026 |
| HighRadius | Forward Deployed Engineer (AP) | Hyderabad | 2 years | 27 Feb 2026 |
| Composio | Applied AI Engineer (US timing) | Bengaluru | 2 years | 7 Sep 2026 |
| Prodigal | Applied AI Engineer | Bengaluru | 2 years | 9 Mar 2026 |
Postings change daily. Check the live board before you apply.
Look at the mix of employers: young AI companies sit next to a large IT-services firm (Kyndryl) and a finance-software company (HighRadius, whose homepage, read 12 Oct 2026, sells automation for the CFO's office). Then look at the titles. Two of the six are Applied AI Engineer, not FDE. If you only search the exact FDE title you miss them, and Applied AI roles often involve much the same build work under a name that sounds less like consulting.
Look at the dates too. HighRadius posted in February and Prodigal's Applied AI role in March, and both were still open on 12 Oct. My reading is that a role open for seven months is hard to fill, which is good news if you can show exactly what it asks for. The wider picture from the same database is in our India FDE jobs report.
The six roles above are one day's snapshot. The live board pulls FDE roles in India from employers' careers pages and can email you new ones every week, so you see entry-level postings the week they open.
Browse live FDE jobs in IndiaWhat does an entry-level FDE posting actually ask for?
Mostly evidence that you can build with AI and talk to a client. Across all 138 listings, client-facing work is the most-mentioned skill (67 listings), then AI agents (55), AWS (38), Python (36) and APIs (35).
For a fresher that ordering is useful. It says the interview will ask about people as well as code, and most fresher portfolios ignore people completely. A project you built alone and never explained to anyone shows half of what these postings want. A small project you scoped with someone who had a real problem, built, demoed and wrote up shows all of it.
I've sorted the full skill counts into must-have, should-have and differentiator tiers in FDE skills and eligibility. If you're starting with no coding at all, read the honest route from a non-technical background first, because that is a longer road and it needs its own plan.
What does a fresher FDE interview test?
In my view, two things: whether your code survives contact with someone else's machine, and whether you can explain a problem to a person who isn't technical. Both can be practised.
A moment from our own class makes the first point better than I can. In the 12 Sep live session of our current fresher batch, the notebook we typed in the room hand-wrote a logfile.txt. It had three bugs in five lines, and it hardcoded a C:\Users\… Windows path that would break on anyone else's laptop. It worked, on that one machine. We built the next two sessions, on 13 and 19 Sep, around fixing exactly that: first turning the notebook into a package with modules, __main__, __init__.py, a virtual environment and the logging module, then making it trustworthy with docstrings, type hints and pytest.
The gap between "works on my laptop" and code a client can run is what a debugging round or a take-home is looking for. If your GitHub projects have hardcoded paths, no tests and print statements where logging should be, an interviewer sees it in under a minute. We've written up how to prepare for the debugging interview exercise and for the customer scenario round, which tests the second point.
DSA comes up in some loops too. I wouldn't skip it, and I wouldn't spend six months on it either. A fresher who can solve medium problems in Python and also show one deployed project is a stronger FDE candidate than one who can only do the first.
What is the FDE fresher salary in India?
Nobody has a reliable answer, and I'd be wary of anyone who gives you one confident number. There is no authoritative salary survey for this role in India, so the best you can do is read what employers print and treat anecdotes as anecdotes.
| Source | What it says | How much weight to give it |
|---|---|---|
| Weekday AI (YC W21), FDE, Bengaluru (Google Jobs listing, 11 Oct 2026) | ₹14–30 LPA printed range | A real posting, though the experience level for that range isn't stated |
| r/developersIndia, UnifyApps fresher FDE interview thread | One commenter: "mostly 12/14 LPA" | Anecdote from one person |
| Same thread | Another commenter: "18-22 LPA for freshers" | Anecdote, and it disagrees with the one above |
Pay figures from a named posting and labelled anecdotes only. We don't promise or predict any salary.
Two comments in the same thread disagree by several lakh, and that is the real story: fresher FDE pay depends heavily on the employer. A startup that runs its product through FDEs is a different offer from an IT-services firm that renamed an onsite role. Read the offer, not the title, and compare fixed pay with fixed pay rather than with someone else's CTC.
Which job titles should a fresher apply for instead?
Apply for FDE roles where the posting is open to you, and in parallel for Applied AI Engineer, implementation engineer, solutions engineer and technical support engineer roles at AI product companies. That widens the pool without changing direction.
Applied AI Engineer is the closest cousin, as two of the six postings above show. Implementation engineering is the FDE workflow with a smaller scope: one client, one deployment, a go-live date. Solutions engineering sits closer to pre-sales, and I've compared it with the FDE role in solutions engineer vs forward deployed engineer.
People also ask whether FDE is a good first job or whether it traps you away from software engineering. My answer is that it doesn't trap you if you keep shipping code. It can, if the job turns out to be an IT-services onsite role with a new name, where your days are configuration and status calls. Ask in the interview what share of the week goes on writing code, and what the last person in the role built. The full comparison is in FDE vs software engineer.
Does a structured course help a fresher, or is it a waste?
A course helps if it leaves you with reviewed, deployed work and practice in front of a client. It's a waste if it leaves you with a certificate and a folder of notebooks. That is the standard I hold our own programme to.
Our FDE for Freshers track runs 6–7 months with no prerequisites, taught live online by working practitioners, with optional classroom labs at our Noida centre. I teach it with Ishaan Sharma. I'm a Senior Data Scientist at Parexel with about ten years in data science and AI, and Ishaan is a Senior Data Scientist at Nuvo AI (Meril Group) with about a decade in NLP, computer vision and GenAI. Every phase ends in a graded project that a mentor code-reviews 1:1. The one I'd point a fresher to is Phase 6, a live roleplay in which you run a mock discovery session and deliver a demo while the mentor plays a difficult enterprise client. It is recorded and reviewed, and it covers exactly the half of the job that fresher portfolios leave out.
EMI from ₹8,000/month; the full fee is shared on a free counselling call. Eligible learners are covered by our job guarantee with minimum package assurance, or 50% of the fee back, for those meeting the attendance, deliverable and capstone criteria. Terms and conditions apply. In plain terms that means at least 70% in every assessment, at least 80% live attendance, at least four logged applications every week, fees settled and attending the interviews we arrange, within six months of certification. The minimum package and every condition are in our published terms.
Who this is not for: if you already have a strong software base and only need the AI layer, 30 weeks is more than you need, so build the projects below yourself or look at our proposed 16-week professionals track. And if you're hoping for an FDE title within three months of graduating, I'd rather tell you now that the postings say otherwise.
What should a fresher build in 90 days if postings ask for 3–5 years?
You can't manufacture years. You can manufacture evidence, and three months of focused, visible work changes how a 2-year posting reads your CV. This plan assumes you can already write basic Python.
Days 1–30: one integration service, done properly
Build a small service that pulls data from a database and a live public API, joins and cleans it, and serves the result through your own API. Put it on GitHub with a README, tests and a sensible folder layout. No hardcoded paths, and logging instead of print. This mirrors our Phase 2 project, and it puts Python, SQL and APIs, which between them appear in dozens of the listings, into one repo.
Days 31–60: deploy it, then add an AI layer
Containerise it with Docker, add a CI pipeline that runs your tests, and deploy it to one cloud so it has a live URL. Then add a retrieval feature that answers questions over a set of documents, and measure whether the answers are right with a small evaluation set. AWS appears in 38 of the listings, so if you have no preference, start there.
Days 61–90: find a real user and write it up
Find one person with a real problem, perhaps a shopkeeper, a college office or a relative's small business, and adapt your service for them. Hold a proper discovery conversation, write a one-page scope, demo it, and publish a short case study of what changed and what you got wrong. Then apply to the entry postings, to Applied AI and implementation roles, and to 2–3 year postings where your case study matches what they describe.
What to do this week
- 1Set up the weekly email alert on our live jobs board so new entry-level postings reach you the week they open.
- 2Open your best GitHub project and fix what an interviewer spots first: hardcoded paths, missing tests and print statements where logging should be.
- 3Read the six postings in the table above in full and list the skills they ask for that your projects don't yet show.
- 4Choose your days 1–30 project and write its one-paragraph scope tonight, naming the database and the public API you'll use.
- 5If you can't decide between self-study and a structured track, book the call below. A counsellor will tell you if self-study is the better fit for you.
Frequently asked questions
Can a fresher become a forward deployed engineer in India?
Yes, but rarely straight out of college. In our 12 Oct 2026 snapshot of 138 Indian FDE and related roles, 6 were entry level and only 2 of the 43 postings that state a minimum asked for a year or less. Freshers who get in usually show deployed projects and apply to Applied AI and implementation roles as well.
What is the salary of a fresher forward deployed engineer in India?
There is no reliable survey. One named posting, Weekday AI's FDE role in Bengaluru, printed ₹14–30 LPA on Google Jobs on 11 Oct 2026 without stating the experience level, and Reddit anecdotes from a UnifyApps fresher thread range from 12–14 LPA to 18–22 LPA. Treat these as signals, not promises.
How much experience do FDE jobs in India ask for?
Of the 43 postings in our snapshot that state a minimum, the median is 5 years: 2 ask for a year or less, 15 for 2–3 years, 13 for 4–6 years and 13 for 7 or more. Most postings (95 of 138) state no minimum at all.
Is FDE a good first job, or will it stop me becoming a software engineer?
It is a good first job if you keep writing and shipping code, because the client and deployment experience transfers to software engineering. The risk is a services onsite role relabelled as FDE, where the work is mostly configuration. Ask in the interview what share of the week is spent coding.
What should a fresher build if FDE jobs ask for 3–5 years?
Build evidence: an integration service with tests and a README, the same service deployed to a cloud with CI and a retrieval feature, and a small real-user project with a written scope and case study. Then apply to entry postings, Applied AI roles and 2–3 year postings that match your work.
