A joining bonus is taxed as salary in the tax year you receive it. Section 18(1)(b)(i) of the Income-tax Act, 2025 treats any amount received from a person before joining employment with them as "profits in lieu of salary". How much tax the bonus attracts depends on your other salary that year, so the month you join matters. In a hypothetical case below, the same ₹2,00,000 bonus costs ₹46,800 of tax when you join in August, and ₹41,600 when you are on the payroll for the whole year.
Where the law puts a joining bonus
The Income-tax Act, 2025_Bill.pdf) applies from 1 April 2026. Its section 18 lists "profits in lieu of salary". This covers amounts received before joining, amounts received after leaving, and compensation on termination. Being paid before your first day does not take the bonus outside salary. Paid with your first month's salary, it falls under salary in the ordinary way. Either way, your employer deducts TDS on it under section 392. It appears on your salary statement, and it goes into the tax year in which you receive it.
The figures below use the new-regime slabs and rebate for tax year 2026-27 (1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027). Those are unchanged from the AY 2026-27 slab table.
Case A: joining on 1 August 2026
Hypothetical terms: fixed gross salary of ₹1,40,000 a month, and a ₹2,00,000 joining bonus paid with the August salary. You had no other salary in this tax year. The figures illustrate the mechanics; they are not a market estimate.
| Line | Without bonus | With bonus |
|---|---|---|
| Salary Aug 2026–Mar 2027 (8 months) | ₹11,20,000 | ₹11,20,000 |
| Joining bonus | – | ₹2,00,000 |
| Gross salary | ₹11,20,000 | ₹13,20,000 |
| Less standard deduction | ₹75,000 | ₹75,000 |
| Total income | ₹10,45,000 | ₹12,45,000 |
| Tax with cess | ₹0 | ₹46,800 |
Without the bonus, income stays under ₹12,00,000 and the section 156 rebate removes the tax. With the bonus, income is ₹45,000 over that line. Marginal relief caps the tax at ₹45,000, and 4% cess makes it ₹46,800. The bonus nets you ₹1,53,200.
Case B: the same offer, joining in April
Now suppose you join on 1 April 2026 and receive twelve months of salary.
| Line | Without bonus | With bonus |
|---|---|---|
| Gross salary | ₹16,80,000 | ₹18,80,000 |
| Total income | ₹16,05,000 | ₹18,05,000 |
| Tax before cess | ₹1,21,000 | ₹1,61,000 |
| Tax with cess | ₹1,25,840 | ₹1,67,440 |
| Tax caused by the bonus | – | ₹41,600 |
Here the bonus sits entirely in the 20% slab: 20% of ₹2,00,000 is ₹40,000, plus cess, which is ₹41,600. The bonus nets you ₹1,58,400.
The August joiner pays more tax on the bonus even though their total income is lower. The first ₹1,55,000 of the August joiner's bonus is tax-free, because it only brings income up to ₹12,00,000. The last ₹45,000 falls in the marginal-relief zone, where each rupee over ₹12,00,000 is taxed at 104% until relief stops applying at about ₹12,70,588 of total income. So ₹45,000 of bonus carries ₹46,800 of tax. The April joiner meets only the ordinary 20% rate.

print("Apr join, full bonus now:", bonus_cost(140000, 12, 200000))
print("Aug join, half now:", bonus_cost(140000, 8, 100000))The third line prints 0.0. If the employer pays ₹1,00,000 in August and the other ₹1,00,000 after 31 March 2027, the 2026-27 income is ₹12,20,000 gross and ₹11,45,000 after the standard deduction. That stays inside the rebate, so the first half carries no tax at all. The second half is taxed in tax year 2027-28, at whatever rates apply then. Those rates are not known yet, so this article cannot compute that half.
What to ask about the bonus before you sign
- Payment month. A bonus paid on the day you join and one paid with the third salary can fall in different tax years if you join in January to March.
- Split payments. Some employers pay a joining bonus in two instalments. That can spread the tax across two years, but check the clawback on each instalment.
- Gross or net. Offers state the gross amount. The TDS on it depends on how payroll projects your year, and in Case A it could take most of the ₹46,800 in August.
- Clawback. Most joining bonuses carry a repayment clause if you leave within a set period. The repayment is usually demanded gross, even though you received it net of tax. Joining bonus clawback works through that arithmetic. We have not verified how a repaid bonus is treated for tax, so get a chartered accountant's view before you repay a large amount.
The same mechanics for other one-off receipts
A notice-period buyout reimbursed by your new employer is also salary income for the year you receive it. So is a relocation lump sum, unless it is covered by an exemption. Run each one through the function above as if it were the bonus. Notice period buyout covers how that amount is priced.
