Data internships: finding them, stipend questions, PPO conversion

To land a data internship that can turn into a job, apply where internships are really listed (company careers pages, internship portals, your college placement cell and referrals), ask before joining whether pre-placement offers (PPOs) are made and on what basis, and treat the internship as a 10–12 week audition with a mid-point review you request yourself. The stipend and PPO questions feel awkward to ask, but asking them early and politely is normal.
Where to look
| Source | What you find there | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Company careers pages | Formal internship programmes, often seasonal | Check in the months before the season; many close early |
| Internship portals | Many small-company and startup roles | Filter for "data", "analytics", "MIS"; read the task description, not the title |
| College placement cell | Campus internships, sometimes with PPO history | Ask seniors who interned there what happened at the end |
| Referrals | Roles never posted publicly | A specific message works better than "any openings?" |
| Government programmes | Official internship schemes | Only apply through the official portal of the scheme |
Government schemes and the AICTE portal are covered in AICTE and government internship portals. Here the focus is private-sector roles where a PPO is the goal.
Questions to ask before accepting
Ask these on the final call or by email to HR. Frame them as planning questions.
1. What is the stipend, and is it paid monthly? Is there any deduction?
2. What will I work on in the first month? Which team and who is my mentor?
3. Does the team make pre-placement offers to interns? How was it decided for
the last batch?
4. Is the internship in office, remote or hybrid, and what are the hours?
5. Will I receive a certificate or letter at the end describing the work?
6. Can I describe my project in my resume and interviews afterwards, within the
confidentiality rules?Question 3 is the one people avoid. A clear answer ("we usually convert about half, based on the final project review") is a good sign. "It depends" is fine too; ask what it depends on.
If an internship asks you to pay a fee, deposit or training charge to join, stop. See job scams in India.
A 12-week plan for conversion
| Weeks | What to do |
|---|---|
| 1 | Agree with your mentor what a good final outcome looks like; write it down |
| 1–3 | Learn the data and tools; ask questions in batches, not one at a time |
| 4–6 | Deliver one small thing someone uses |
| 6 | Ask for a mid-internship review (template below) |
| 7–10 | Work on the main project; share progress weekly |
| 11 | Present the project; ask the PPO question directly |
| 12 | Hand over cleanly: documented code, a short write-up |
The mid-internship review request
Most interns wait to be reviewed. Asking at week 6 gives you time to fix what the team notices.
Hi Rahul,
I am halfway through the internship and would find it useful to hear how I am
doing so far. Could we take 20 minutes this week? I would like to know:
- what is going well,
- one thing I should do differently in the next six weeks,
- whether the main project is on track for what the team needs.
Thanks,
[Name]Write down what they say and act on the "one thing" visibly.
Asking about the PPO at the end
In week 11, after the presentation, ask your manager directly and briefly:
I have really enjoyed working on the returns dashboard. I would like to join
the team full time after graduation. Is there a possibility of a pre-placement
offer, and is there anything else I should show before that decision? Then accept the answer. If there is no headcount, ask whether they would act as a reference, and ask for your internship letter to describe the project.
What to take away either way
- The certificate or letter, with dates and project description.
- A short write-up of your project, with company-sensitive detail removed, for your resume and GitHub profile.
- Your mentor's contact, with their permission, for references.
Interns who convert usually arrive already comfortable with SQL and Excel, so the internship is spent on the business rather than basics. The Data Analyst programme covers those foundations over 3–4 months.
Frequently asked questions
What is a PPO in an internship?
A pre-placement offer is a full-time job offer made to an intern, usually near the end of the internship, based on performance and the team's hiring needs. It is not guaranteed by the internship itself unless the company says so in writing.
Should I take an internship with no PPO possibility?
It can still be worth it if the work is real and you will leave with something you can show, such as a dashboard, analysis or code you are allowed to describe. Ask what you will work on before accepting.
