The short answer

In the new tax regime for tax year 2026-27, a salary of ₹12,75,000 carries no income tax. Just above that level, marginal relief caps the tax at the amount by which your income crosses ₹12,00,000. The 4% cess is then added on top of that capped tax, so between roughly ₹12,75,000 and ₹13,46,000 of gross salary, each extra rupee of salary costs about ₹1.04 in tax. Your annual in-hand actually falls slightly as the offer rises, until you are well past the zone.

The rules this calculation uses

Everything here applies to a resident individual under the default regime in section 202(1) of the Income-tax Act, 2025, which took effect on 1 April 2026. The Finance Bill 2026 memorandum states that no change was proposed to the rates for tax year 2026-27, and the slabs match those on the Income Tax Department's AY 2026-27 page.

  • Standard deduction of ₹75,000 under section 19(1).
  • Slabs: nil to ₹4,00,000, then 5%, 10%, 15%, 20% and 25% in ₹4,00,000 bands, and 30% above ₹24,00,000.
  • Rebate under section 156 (previously 87A): tax up to ₹60,000 is cancelled when total income does not exceed ₹12,00,000.
  • Marginal relief: above ₹12,00,000, tax before cess is limited to the income above ₹12,00,000.
  • 4% Health and Education cess on the tax.

You can read the section text in the Income-tax Act, 2025 as passed_Bill.pdf). The rate position is confirmed in the Finance Bill 2026 memorandum.

A hypothetical ₹13,56,000 CTC, taken apart

Assume an offer letter shows a CTC of ₹13,56,000, made up of:

  • ₹13,20,000 gross salary.
  • ₹36,000 employer PF: 12% of the ₹25,000 monthly EPF wage ceiling that applies from 17 September 2026, for twelve months.

The employee deducts the same ₹36,000 as their own PF. Replace these figures with yours; the method does not change.

StepAmount
Gross salary₹13,20,000
Less standard deduction₹75,000
Total income₹12,45,000
Slab tax: ₹60,000 + 15% of ₹45,000₹66,750
Marginal relief cap: income above ₹12,00,000₹45,000
Tax after relief (lower of the two)₹45,000
Cess at 4%₹1,800
Total tax₹46,800
Employee PF₹36,000
Annual in-hand: ₹13,20,000 − ₹46,800 − ₹36,000₹12,37,200

Spread over twelve months, that is ₹1,10,000 gross less ₹3,900 TDS less ₹3,000 PF, or ₹1,03,100 a month. If your state levies professional tax, it will also be deducted. It gives no income-tax deduction in the new regime, because section 202(2)(a)(iv) excludes it.

Why the next ₹10,000 raise loses you money

Move the gross salary from ₹13,20,000 to ₹13,30,000. Total income becomes ₹12,55,000, so the relief cap rises to ₹55,000 and the tax with cess to ₹57,200. You receive ₹10,000 more salary and pay ₹10,400 more tax, leaving your annual in-hand ₹400 lower at ₹12,36,800.

The zone ends where the ordinary slab tax falls back below the cap. That happens when ₹60,000 + 15% × x equals x, where x is the income above ₹12,00,000. Solving gives x = ₹70,588. So the zone covers total income up to about ₹12,70,588, which is gross salary up to about ₹13,45,588. Above that, the normal 15% slab plus cess applies, and in-hand starts climbing again.

Gross salaryTax with cessAnnual in-hand after PF
₹12,75,000₹0₹12,39,000
₹13,00,000₹26,000₹12,38,000
₹13,20,000₹46,800₹12,37,200
₹13,45,588₹73,412₹12,36,176
₹13,60,000₹75,660₹12,48,340

The function below reproduces the table. It also finds the gross salary at which in-hand gets back to the ₹12,75,000 level.

# Synthetic figures for illustration. New regime, tax year 2026-27, resident individual.
BANDS = [(400000, 0.0), (800000, 0.05), (1200000, 0.10), (1600000, 0.15),
         (2000000, 0.20), (2400000, 0.25), (float("inf"), 0.30)]

def tax_new_regime(total_income):
    slab, lower = 0.0, 0
    for upper, rate in BANDS:
        if total_income > lower:
            slab += (min(total_income, upper) - lower) * rate
        lower = upper
    if total_income <= 1200000:
        return 0.0                                   # section 156 rebate
    capped = min(slab, total_income - 1200000)       # marginal relief
    return round(capped * 1.04, 2)                   # 4% cess

def annual_in_hand(gross, employee_pf=36000):
    return gross - employee_pf - tax_new_regime(gross - 75000)

for g in (1275000, 1300000, 1320000, 1345588, 1360000):
    print(f"{g:>9,}  tax {tax_new_regime(g - 75000):>9,.0f}  in-hand {annual_in_hand(g):>11,.0f}")

target = annual_in_hand(1275000)
g = 1275001
while annual_in_hand(g) < target:
    g += 1
print("in-hand recovers to the ₹12,75,000 level at gross", f"{g:,}")

The loop prints ₹13,48,934. If an offer's gross salary falls between ₹12,75,000 and about ₹13,49,000, it gives you no more take-home pay than ₹12,75,000 would. Keep that in mind before you accept a small hike framed as a win.

Three ways the zone changes shape

Employer NPS. The new regime allows a section 124 deduction for employer contributions to NPS of up to 14% of salary, where salary means basic plus DA. On a ₹6,00,000 basic, the limit is ₹84,000. If ₹45,000 of the ₹13,20,000 gross is paid into NPS instead of as special allowance, total income drops to ₹12,00,000 and the tax becomes zero. The money is locked in a pension account, so decide whether that trade suits you. Employer NPS in the new regime works through the restructure.

Other income. Savings or fixed-deposit interest is added to salary before the ₹12,00,000 test. A salaried person with ₹12,75,000 gross and ₹20,000 of interest has total income of ₹12,20,000. That lands in the relief zone, and they owe ₹20,800 after cess.

A joining bonus or variable pay received in the same tax year counts as salary for that year. A ₹50,000 bonus on a ₹12,75,000 package pushes you into the zone for that year only. Joining bonus tax covers the one-off version.

Checking your own number

Enter your gross salary and deductions into the official income-tax calculator and compare its answer with the function above. If your employer's monthly TDS looks higher than your own projection, ask HR which figures they have assumed. Employers deduct at the average rate on their estimate of your annual salary, so a missing figure changes every month's deduction.

Frequently asked questions

Is salary up to ₹12.75 lakh tax-free in the new regime?

For a resident individual with only salary income in tax year 2026-27, yes in effect. The ₹75,000 standard deduction brings ₹12,75,000 of salary down to ₹12,00,000 of total income, and the section 156 rebate cancels the tax on income up to that level. Other income such as interest is added before the rebate test, so check your total, not just salary.

What does marginal relief actually cap?

Once total income crosses ₹12,00,000, the tax before cess cannot exceed the amount by which your income crosses ₹12,00,000. The 4% cess is then charged on that capped tax, which is why each extra rupee in this zone costs you slightly more than a rupee.
