The short answer

In a third-party payroll role, you work at a client company, often at its office and on its projects, but your employer is a staffing or IT services vendor that pays your salary, deducts your PF and issues your letters. Before accepting, ask who issues your appointment letter, how long the contract runs, what happens when it ends, and which benefits come from the vendor rather than the client. These roles can be a reasonable way into data work if you know exactly what you are signing.

Who is who

PartyWhat they do for you
Client companyGives you work, a manager, an office desk or system access
Vendor (your employer)Issues offer and appointment letters, pays salary, deducts PF and TDS, handles leave and exit
RecruiterMay work for the vendor or for a third agency that placed you

Your EPF service history and your relieving letter will show the vendor's name, not the client's. That matters later for background verification: list the vendor as employer on your resume, with the client as the place you worked.

If the client's name is confidential under your contract, write the industry instead, as above.

Ten questions for the vendor's HR

Ask these to the vendor's HR, in writing if possible.

Employment
1. Which company issues my offer and appointment letter?
2. Is this a fixed-term contract? What is the end date, and how is renewal decided?
3. If the client ends the project early, what happens: redeployment, notice, or exit?
4. What is the notice period on my side and on yours?

Pay and benefits
5. What is the CTC breakup, and which components are paid monthly?
6. Is PF deducted, and on what basis? Is there health insurance, and from whom?
7. Who approves leave: the client manager or the vendor?
8. Are there any deductions for the vendor's margin or "admin" from my salary?

Growth
9. Is there any route to a permanent role with the client, and has it happened
   for others in this team?
10. Do I get access to the client's learning resources, or the vendor's?

Question 8 should always be answered with "no". Your CTC is your CTC; a vendor's margin is charged to the client, not deducted from you. Question 9 is often answered vaguely; do not accept a role on the assumption of conversion.

Compare it properly against a permanent offer

A fictional comparison with hypothetical figures:

FactorContract via vendorPermanent at a smaller firm
Fixed pay₹6,60,000₹6,00,000
Contract length12 months, renewableOngoing
Health insuranceVendor group policy, self onlyCompany policy, self + family
PFYesYes
WorkDashboards for a large retail clientMixed reporting and some modelling
Brand on resumeVendor + client industryThe smaller firm
RiskProject ends, redeployment uncertainCompany performance

Neither column wins automatically. A contract with better work and learning can be the stronger first job; a slightly higher contract salary with no renewal clarity may not be.

Signs to be cautious

  • No written offer letter, only a WhatsApp message with a joining date.
  • A request for a fee, deposit or "security" from you. Genuine vendors do not charge candidates; see job scams.
  • Salary paid in cash or without payslips.
  • No PF deduction where you would expect one, with no explanation.
  • A contract that says the vendor can end your employment instantly while you must give long notice.

While you are in the role

  • Keep your payslips, contract and every extension letter.
  • Ask for the renewal decision well before the end date, by email.
  • Build work you can describe: the problem, your query or model, the result, with client details removed.
  • When you leave, make sure the vendor issues the relieving letter; if it does not, use the steps in relieving letter problems.

If you are taking a contract role to get into data work and want to move towards modelling, the Data Science programme runs for six months, live online with recordings, which fits alongside a client-site schedule.
