On the new regime for tax year 2026-27, moving pay between basic and other allowances does not change your tax on its own. It changes what is calculated on basic: provident fund if contributions run on full basic, the room for tax-deductible employer NPS, and any benefit your employer links to basic. On a hypothetical ₹18,00,000 gross, raising basic from 30% to 50% cuts annual in-hand by ₹43,200 if PF is on full basic, and by nothing if PF stays on the ₹25,000 ceiling.
The three structures
| 30% basic | 40% basic | 50% basic | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Annual basic | ₹5,40,000 | ₹7,20,000 | ₹9,00,000 |
| Monthly basic | ₹45,000 | ₹60,000 | ₹75,000 |
| Other allowances | ₹12,60,000 | ₹10,80,000 | ₹9,00,000 |
| Gross | ₹18,00,000 | ₹18,00,000 | ₹18,00,000 |
All figures are hypothetical. There is no DA, and employer PF sits outside gross. On the new regime, tax on ₹18,00,000 less the ₹75,000 standard deduction is ₹1,50,800 with cess in all three. The rates are on the department's slab page.
Effect 1: provident fund
EPFO's wage ceiling FAQ sets EPF wages as basic plus DA plus retaining allowance, with a ₹25,000 monthly ceiling from 17 September 2026. All three basics are above it.
| 30% | 40% | 50% | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Employee PF, on ceiling | ₹36,000 | ₹36,000 | ₹36,000 |
| Employee PF, on full basic | ₹64,800 | ₹86,400 | ₹1,08,000 |
| Annual in-hand, PF on ceiling | ₹16,13,200 | ₹16,13,200 | ₹16,13,200 |
| Annual in-hand, PF on full basic | ₹15,84,400 | ₹15,62,800 | ₹15,41,200 |
If your employer contributes on the ceiling, the basic share makes no difference to in-hand. If it contributes on full basic, each extra 10 points of basic moves ₹21,600 a year from your account into your EPF, and the employer adds a matching 12%. Whether that is a loss depends on whether you value the EPF balance. EPF on the ceiling or full basic goes deeper.
Effect 2: room for employer NPS
Section 124 of the Income-tax Act, 2025_Bill.pdf) allows a deduction for the employer's NPS contribution up to 14% of salary on the new regime, where salary for this purpose is basic plus DA. A bigger basic means a bigger ceiling.
Suppose your employer offers to move the full 14% out of allowances and into NPS, keeping CTC the same, with PF on the ceiling.
| 30% | 40% | 50% | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Employer NPS at 14% of basic | ₹75,600 | ₹1,00,800 | ₹1,26,000 |
| Tax after the deduction | ₹1,35,075 | ₹1,29,834 | ₹1,24,644 |
| Tax saved | ₹15,725 | ₹20,966 | ₹26,156 |
| Annual in-hand | ₹15,53,325 | ₹15,33,366 | ₹15,13,356 |
Most of the saving is at 20% plus cess, since taxable income here sits in the 20% slab. At 50% basic, ₹1,000 of the deduction falls in the 15% slab, so the saving is slightly less than 20.8% of ₹1,26,000. Your in-hand falls by more than the tax saved, because the NPS money is locked into a pension account. Employer NPS on the new regime weighs that trade.
Effect 3: benefits your employer links to basic
Some pay policies calculate benefits on basic. We have not verified any statutory formula for this article, so these are conditionals, not rules:
- Gratuity. If your offer shows a gratuity provision and your employer calculates it on basic, it rises in proportion. You receive gratuity only on leaving and only if you qualify.
- Leave encashment. If your policy values a day's leave on basic, a higher basic raises every encashed day. On leaving, the tax exemption on encashment has its own four-limit test, so a larger payment is not automatically all exempt.
- Notice recovery. A notice shortfall charged on basic also rises, which cuts the other way.
Read your policy for each of these. If the offer letter does not say which salary figure a benefit uses, ask HR to confirm it in writing before you accept.

Employer PF, NPS and superannuation contributions above ₹7,50,000 in a year become taxable under section 17(1)(h). Here the largest total is ₹1,08,000 of employer PF plus ₹1,26,000 of NPS, well below it. At higher pay the cap can matter; see the ₹7.5 lakh cap on employer contributions.
Changing one parameter and tracing every quantity that depends on it is sensitivity analysis, a core habit in our Data Science programme. It is taught live online, with optional in-person labs at our Noida centre.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a legal minimum share of basic pay?
The labour codes are often discussed in this context, but we have not verified any such rule for this article, so we make no claim either way. Ask HR how your structure was set and whether it is expected to change.
Does a higher basic raise my tax under the new regime?
Not by itself. Basic, HRA and special allowance are all salary. Section 202(2) removes the rent allowance exemption under the new regime, so the split between basic and HRA does not change tax. It matters through PF, NPS and any benefit your employer calculates on basic.
