The short answer

When you rent a room, PG bed or flat in Delhi NCR, your landlord is normally expected to get you verified with the local police. In Delhi this is done through the Delhi Police citizen services portal, and in Noida and Ghaziabad through the UP Police tenant/PG verification service. Gurugram and Faridabad fall under Haryana Police, whose site we could not reach, so ask your landlord or the local police station for the process there. The part in your control is a document folder prepared before you move, and a copy of the submitted form for yourself.

Which portal, by where the property is

The police jurisdiction is decided by the address of the property, not by where your office is or which state issued your Aadhaar.

Property is inPolice serviceWhere to start (as of September 2026)
Delhi (any district)Delhi Police"Domestic Help/Tenant Registration" on the Delhi Police citizen services portal
Noida, Greater Noida (Gautam Buddh Nagar), GhaziabadUttar Pradesh Police"Tenant/PG Verification" through UP Police citizen services (CCTNS portal and the UPCOP app)
Gurugram, FaridabadHaryana PoliceWe could not verify the online service; ask the landlord or the nearest police station

A worked example: you take a PG bed in Noida Sector 62 and work in Delhi's Connaught Place. Your verification goes to UP Police, because the PG is in Gautam Buddh Nagar. Your Delhi office has no role in it.

Build the folder before the move

Landlords usually fill in the form, but they need details from you, and a delayed form can delay your key handover. Keep these in one folder on your phone, plus paper copies:

  • Government photo ID: Aadhaar, passport, voter ID or driving licence.
  • A recent passport-size photograph (a clear digital copy works for online forms).
  • Your permanent address as it appears on your ID.
  • Details of your previous address, if different.
  • Your employer's or college's name and address, and an ID card or offer letter.
  • Two emergency contacts with phone numbers.
  • The rent agreement, or the PG's written terms if there is no agreement.

The exact fields vary by portal and change over time, so check the live form rather than relying on this list.

Questions to ask the landlord or PG owner

Use these on your visit, before you pay a deposit:

  1. 1Who submits the verification, you or me?
  2. 2Will you share the acknowledgement or reference number once it is submitted?
  3. 3Is there a written agreement, and does it list everyone who will stay in the room?
  4. 4If I move rooms or buildings within the same PG, is a fresh verification needed?
  5. 5What happens to my ID copies when I move out?

The fifth question gets little attention. You are handing over identity documents, so ask for them to be returned or destroyed when you leave, and never hand over original documents. You can also write "for tenant verification only" and the date across a photocopy before you give it, which limits reuse.

A tracking sheet you can keep

If you are renting with flatmates, or helping a group of first-job joiners relocate, a small table helps you avoid chasing the same thing three times:

PersonProperty addressPolice portalDocuments given (date)Submitted byReference numberCopy received
You
Flatmate 1
Flatmate 2

If you like working in a spreadsheet, this is also a small exercise in data-entry validation. Add a rule that flags a row where "Submitted by" is filled but "Reference number" is blank for more than a week.

Helplines worth saving on day one

Relocating often means late arrivals and unfamiliar routes. Save these before you travel:

  • 112: Emergency Response Support System, nationwide.
  • 1091: women's helpline, listed by Delhi Police.
  • 1930: national cybercrime helpline, also at cybercrime.gov.in, for rental-deposit frauds made through fake listings.

Rental frauds often start with a deposit demand for a flat you have not seen. Do not pay before a visit, and verify that the person you are paying is the owner or an authorised agent.

Where this fits in a move

Police verification is one of about a dozen things to sort in your first month in NCR. The 30-day relocation checklist covers the rest, and PG or flat share helps with the housing choice itself. If you are moving to study rather than work, remember that our programmes are live online with optional in-person labs at the Noida centre, so you may not need to move at all. The Data Analyst programme page explains the schedule.
