Your resume's location line should give a city a recruiter can place on a map: "Noida, Uttar Pradesh", "Gurugram, Haryana" or "New Delhi". Add a relocation or commute note when you are applying outside your own city. Skip full street addresses, and do not write only "Delhi NCR" when you actually live in one specific city. NCR's overlapping names (Gurgaon and Gurugram, Noida and Gautam Buddh Nagar, New Delhi and Delhi) are also what recruiters' search filters match on, so small wording choices can decide whether your resume turns up in a search.
The names that confuse filters
| You might write | Official or common form | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| Gurgaon | Gurugram (renamed 2016), Haryana | "Gurugram, Haryana"; optionally "Gurugram (Gurgaon)" once |
| Gautam Buddh Nagar | The district containing Noida and Greater Noida; its headquarters is in Greater Noida | Write the city, "Noida" or "Greater Noida", not the district |
| Noida Extension | Commonly used for Greater Noida West | "Greater Noida West" or "Noida (Greater Noida West)" |
| Delhi NCR | A planning region spanning parts of Delhi, Haryana, UP and Rajasthan | Use as a willingness note, not as your address |
| New Delhi | Strictly, a district of Delhi; commonly used for the whole city | "New Delhi" or "Delhi" are both understood; keep it consistent with your ID |
| Ghaziabad, Faridabad | Separate districts in UP and Haryana | Write them as they are; do not merge them into "Delhi" |
The last row matters because a recruiter who later sees "Ghaziabad" on your ID or offer paperwork may wonder why your resume said "Delhi". A small mismatch like that raises an unnecessary question.
Three header versions, for three situations
Pick the one that matches your real situation and use it on your job-portal profile too, so the two agree.
You live and want to work in the same city:
Priya Verma | Noida, Uttar Pradesh | +91 XXXXX XXXXX | priya.v@example.com | linkedin.com/in/exampleYou live in one NCR city and apply across the region:
Priya Verma | Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh (open to Noida, Delhi, Gurugram) | +91 XXXXX XXXXX | priya.v@example.comYou are relocating from outside NCR:
Priya Verma | Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh | Relocating to Noida from January 2027 | +91 XXXXX XXXXX | priya.v@example.comThe names and contact details above are placeholders. In the third version, give a date you can actually keep. "Immediate relocation" that turns into two months is a common reason offers fall through.
What not to put on the line
- Your full street address or house number. A resume travels further than you expect; a city is enough.
- A sector number by itself. "Sector 62" means something to a Noida recruiter and nothing to a hiring manager in Bengaluru reviewing a remote role. If you include it, write "Sector 62, Noida".
- A pin code without a city.
- "Anywhere in India" with no base location. Filters need a place to start.
Matching the job post's own wording
Job posts in NCR are inconsistent. A post may say "Gurgaon" in the title, "Gurugram" in the body and "Delhi/NCR" in the location filter. The practical move:
- 1Read the location field of three or four job posts you want, on the portal you use.
- 2Note the exact strings they use.
- 3Make sure your profile's location field and your resume header together cover those strings honestly, for example "Gurugram (Gurgaon), Haryana" in the header and "Delhi NCR" in the preferred-locations field.
This is a small version of the text-matching problem analysts work on routinely: two spellings of one entity. If you have ever cleaned a customer table where "Gurgaon", "Gurugram", "GGN" and "gurgoan" all needed to become one value, you already know why recruiters' filters miss people. That cleaning task makes a good interview story, and the free skill check will show whether your resume already tells stories like it.
Location in the experience section
For each past role, write the city of the office you worked from, not the company's headquarters:
- "Data Analyst Intern, [Company], Noida" (the office you went to)
- "MIS Executive, [Company], Remote (Gurugram-based team)" (if you worked remotely)
Remote and hybrid roles are common in NCR analytics teams. Stating the arrangement plainly helps a recruiter understand the experience, and it sets up the conversation about office days that you should have anyway. Our guide to hybrid office-day questions covers that conversation.
What goes under those headers matters more than the header itself. If your project section is thin, the Data Analyst programme spends 3–4 months building one, wherever you live in NCR, since classes are live online.
Frequently asked questions
Should I write Gurgaon or Gurugram on my resume?
Write Gurugram, the city's official name since 2016, as your main location. Recruiter search tools and older job posts still use Gurgaon, so it does no harm to include "Gurugram (Gurgaon)" once in your header if you want to match both.
Is it a problem if I live in Ghaziabad and apply for Gurugram jobs?
Not by itself. Some recruiters screen for commute, so state your willingness to relocate or your commute plan in one line, rather than hiding your location. An honest location with a clear plan reads better than a location that turns out to be wrong at the offer stage.
