In Delhi NCR, analysts work in IT services and business process firms, manufacturing and automotive supply chains, retail and e-commerce, warehousing and logistics, news and digital media, banking and financial services, healthcare, and government. The core tools are the same everywhere. What changes is the question you are asked to answer. Choose one industry, learn its three or four standard metrics, and build a portfolio project that answers one of its questions. That is better preparation than a generic dashboard.
A region with several economies in it
NCR is not one job market. Parts of Noida and Gurugram have concentrations of IT parks and special economic zones. The belts around Manesar, Faridabad and the Greater Noida industrial areas carry manufacturing and automotive supply chains. There are warehousing clusters along the major highways out of Delhi. Media companies have offices around Noida Film City in Sector 16-A. Delhi itself has central and state government departments that publish and use large amounts of statistics.
This article describes the kinds of work analysts do in each sector. It does not claim that any particular company is hiring. Openings change weekly. What matters for you is which sector's questions you are ready to answer.
Industry by industry: the question, the data, the task to practise
| Sector | Question an analyst is often asked | Typical data shape | Portfolio task to build on synthetic data |
|---|---|---|---|
| IT services and business process work | Are we meeting service levels for this client? | Ticket or call logs with timestamps, queue, agent, resolution code | SLA breach rate by queue and hour, with a chart of the worst hours |
| Manufacturing and auto components | Why did rejections rise on line 2 this month? | Shift production logs, defect codes, machine IDs | Pareto chart of defect causes by shift |
| Retail and e-commerce | Which products and cities are driving returns? | Order lines, returns, pin codes, categories | Return rate by category and city tier, with a note on sample sizes |
| Warehousing and logistics | Are we shipping complete orders on time? | Order lines, promised dates, dispatch scans | On-time and in-full calculation at order-line level |
| News and digital media | Which stories hold readers, not just attract clicks? | Page views, engaged time, section, referrer | Engaged time per story by section and referrer |
| Banking and finance | Which loans are sliding into overdue? | Loan accounts, repayment schedules, receipts | Days-past-due bucket counts over three months |
| Healthcare | How long do patients wait from registration to consultation? | Registration and consultation timestamps by department | Median wait by department and weekday |
| Government and public data | How does this district compare with the state? | Published tables from official portals | A cleaned, documented comparison with the source cited |
The last column is the useful one. A recruiter in logistics can see from a project titled "OTIF by order line, with partial shipments handled" that you understand their problem. A project titled "sales dashboard" gives them no such signal.
How to choose your first industry
Score each sector against three questions, one point per yes:
- 1Do I already know how this business works? Working in a shop, a factory, a bank branch or a hospital counts.
- 2Can I build a realistic synthetic dataset for it? You should know which columns exist and what values look sensible.
- 3Can I explain its main metric in one sentence without looking it up?
Start with the sector that scores highest. Previous work experience matters here. An accounts assistant usually scores highest on finance. Someone from a dispatch floor scores highest on logistics.
One industry, worked through: the logistics question
Here is what "learn the vocabulary" means in one sector. In warehousing and logistics you will hear fill rate (the share of ordered quantity actually shipped), on-time (shipped by the promised date), and OTIF (on time and in full). Interviewers often check whether you know that OTIF can be measured at order level or at order-line level, and that the two give different figures.
Take a hypothetical order with three lines. Two shipped complete and on time. One shipped late and short. At line level, OTIF for this order is 2 of 3 lines. At order level, the order counts as a failure, because one line failed. If you can explain which method your hypothetical client uses and why the two numbers differ, you will sound like someone who has worked with this data, even though your dataset is synthetic.
Every sector in the table has a similar distinction that interviewers use to test candidates. In media it is engaged time against page views. In banking it is a loan's days past due against its classification. In healthcare it is the median against the mean for wait times. Learn the one for your chosen sector.
Industries you can reach without relocating
Because our sessions are live online, with optional in-person labs at our Noida centre, you can build industry-specific projects wherever you live in NCR. Where you live still shapes which sectors are easy to learn about. A learner in Faridabad knows more factory floors than newsrooms. Use that. See our note on media analytics near Noida Film City for one sector that is closely tied to a place.
The Data Analyst programme covers the shared core, meaning SQL, spreadsheets, BI and GenAI-assisted analysis, over 3–4 months. If you are deciding between analytics and a broader modelling role, data analytics vs data science compares how the day-to-day work differs.
Frequently asked questions
Which industry should a fresher analyst in NCR target first?
Choose the industry whose data you can understand quickly, not the one that sounds most exciting. If you have worked in a shop, a warehouse or an accounts office, a portfolio project built on that kind of data will be easier to explain in an interview than a generic dataset from an unfamiliar sector.
Do I need industry-specific tools for these roles?
The core is the same across industries, namely SQL, spreadsheets, a BI tool and clear written explanation. What changes is the vocabulary and the questions, such as fill rate in logistics, rejection rate in manufacturing or engaged time in media. Learning the vocabulary of one industry well is a reasonable first step.
