DA, DS or FDE: a decision tree by background and weekly hours

Choose DA, DS or FDE by answering three questions in order: what work you want to do most days, how many hours a week you can truly protect for the next six months, and what you already know. Data Analyst suits people who want to answer business questions; Data Science suits people who want to build predictive models; FDE suits people who want to build and ship software, including AI systems, for real users.
The three programmes in one table
| Data Analyst (DA) | Data Science (DS) | FDE for Freshers | FDE for Professionals | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Typical daily work | Queries, reports, dashboards, explaining numbers | Features, models, evaluation, experiments | Building, integrating and deploying software and AI workflows with clients | Leading AI deployments in client environments |
| Duration at NeuraPath | 3–4 months | 6 months | 6–7 months (about 30 weeks) | Proposed schedule |
| Coding at entry | None required | Helpful, not required | None required | Existing engineering skill, assessed by tasks |
| Output you show employers | Dashboards and written analyses | Evaluated models and notebooks | Deployed working systems | Production-grade engagements |
Durations are for our programmes; other institutes' versions differ.
The decision tree
Work through it on paper. Answer honestly; the tree is only as good as the hours you write down.
Q1. Which sentence describes the work you want most days?
(a) "Find out why a number changed and explain it." -> go to Q2
(b) "Predict what will happen and measure how well." -> go to Q3
(c) "Build something that works for a user, and ship it." -> go to Q4
Q2. (analysis) Hours you can protect every week for 3-4 months?
under 6 -> start with free SQL + Excel practice for 6 weeks, then recheck
6 or more -> DATA ANALYST
Q3. (prediction) Are you comfortable with school-level algebra
and willing to learn statistics properly?
no -> DATA ANALYST first; move to DS after 6-12 months of work
yes -> Hours per week for 6 months?
under 8 -> DA now, DS later
8 or more -> DATA SCIENCE
Q4. (building) Have you written and shipped software at work?
no, or only college projects -> Hours per week for 6-7 months?
under 10 -> build basics first (Python, Git) for 8 weeks, recheck
10 or more -> FDE FOR FRESHERS
yes, several years -> FDE FOR PROFESSIONALS (check readiness tasks)Why the hours question sits in the middle
Most wrong choices come from picking the programme that sounds best and then discovering the week cannot hold it. A useful rule is that each live hour needs about one more hour of practice. A programme with six live hours a week asks for roughly twelve hours of your week in total. Look at the 10-hours-a-week timetable to see what that looks like against a full-time job.
If the tree sends you to "recheck", that is not a failure. Six weeks of free practice tells you whether you enjoy the work, which is the thing a brochure cannot tell you.
Adjustments by background
The tree is general; a few backgrounds shift the answer.
- Commerce, finance or accounting. Your reconciliation and spreadsheet habits transfer directly to analysis. DA is the natural first step; DS later if you enjoy the statistics.
- Engineering graduate who avoided coding. You probably have the maths for DS. The question is whether you want to model or to build. If you liked debugging hardware or systems, FDE may suit you better than you expect.
- Working software developer. You can skip most foundations. Decide between DS (if you want modelling) and FDE for Professionals (if you want to deploy AI systems with clients). Do not take a fresher programme to relearn Python.
- Operations, support or sales. Your advantage is knowing how businesses actually run. DA uses that quickly. FDE uses it too, because client-facing delivery is part of the job, but asks for more hours.
Two checks before you commit
- 1Read three real job descriptions for the role the tree gave you. If the daily work described bores you, go back to Q1.
- 2Talk to one person doing that job. Ask what they did last Tuesday. The answer is more useful than any comparison table, including this one.
For a longer comparison of analysis and modelling work, read data analytics vs data science. If the tree landed you on FDE, the FDE hub explains the role and both programme tracks.
Frequently asked questions
Should a fresher with no coding choose data analytics or FDE?
Choose by the work you want to do every day. Data analytics centres on answering business questions with SQL, spreadsheets and dashboards. FDE centres on building and deploying software, including AI systems, with and for clients. Both can start from zero coding, but FDE is longer and asks for more weekly hours.
How many hours a week do I need for a data science course?
Plan for the course's live hours plus roughly as much again for practice. If you cannot protect around ten hours a week for six months, a shorter programme or a slower self-paced start is usually the better choice.
